"Excuse me, sir, a hit-and-run case happened 15 minutes ago near XA Groceries Store."

"Yes, sir, the victim is a woman in her late 20s. Considering her outfit, she might be a resident in the nearby apartments."

"She got seriously injured and was bleeding severely."

"We should inform her family or someone with whom she lives."

She got drowned in the pool of her blood. Being a senseless, motionless body, she lost her consciousness before someone approached her. Someone checked her breathing and pulse, but that isn't positive. Vehicles couldn't move as people gathered around her, and those in the opposite lane stopped to check and take pictures.

The environment became chaotic and disturbed the traffic, while someone informed the police and called the ambulance. After 30 minutes, she was taken to the nearest hospital. All this time, her beating got so slow and uneven, as she was not in her senses. By the time she reached the entrance, Kartheeka rushed there and took her inside.

"Deepu,

Deepu, open your eyes..."

Her screams echoed on the floor, took everyone's attention still didn't help to bring her back to her senses.

She was taken to the intensive care, and Kartheeka's father has a friend who is working in the same hospital and as charge of that branch. With his help, treatment started quickly. In the meantime, she informed her parents and their friends. Parthiv didn't lift the call, to which she informed their H.O.D.

Time passed by, and Kartheeka's Parents arrived after some time, when one of the doctors came out and explained her condition.

"We dressed the wounds, since the car hit the right side of her body, a few ribs and right arm got fractured, and the position of the vertebrae slightly changed as she was thrown by that hit. That needs some minor surgeries; her knees and toes got fractured heavily, but the bone didn't move from its position.

We will decide this once the patient is out of danger, as her heartbeat is uneven. Shocked by the accident that happened in front of her eyes, followed by a strong blow to her body, she is not in a stable condition. We have to observe her for the next 18 hours before proceeding to the next step. You can inform her family to stay."

She nodded to the doctors while tears rolled down her cheeks. Her mother took her into her arms while her father stroked her hair.

"What's wrong with her fate, Mom? Why does she have to suffer every time?"

"It's okay, Karthee, she will recover from that. Just wait and see, within 2 days she will be back with her smile."

"Poor girl, worked so hard to stand on her feet and even support her family. You know she never asked for my help, being a girl and living alone and never seeking any support from us, even at the times when she desperately needed it. I used to tell her not to hesitate, yet she wants to keep things between us in the most respectable way. Now look at her-"

She was sobbing hard and venting out the memories of her.

"Karthee, we all know that she is a nice and humble girl. But don't cry, we still have hope. Let's pray that she will come out of this danger."

"You know, Dad, she is the greatest friend I have, and she is someone whom I always pray that she will get the best in her life wholeheartedly. She faced a lot of pain, and I can't see her drowning in that anymore."

3 hours passed, Deepthi's family arrived as they were taking the footsteps quickly looking for her room, and stopped when they saw Kartheeka.

She explained everything to them, and they broke down in tears. Kartheeka and their family are consoling them and suggesting to be strong while she, as a friend going through the same agony.

On the other side, Parthiv finally finished his consecutive meetings and got some time to breathe, and the first one he dialed was Deepthi, who couldn't connect. He frowned for a second after seeing the missed calls list, which was higher than usual. He called his mom as she picked up on the fourth ring.

P: "Hey, Mom, how's your pilgrimage? I thought of calling you tonight. Anything Important?"

M: "Parthiv, I guess you are not aware of the news, so we called you to inform that Deepthi got into an accident."

P: "Mom, are you serious?"

M: "Why would someone joke about this-"

P: "Then why the hell didn't you inform me earlier? Don't you want me to know?"

Meena got jerked by the sudden change in his tone. She is trying to explain, but stops as he is not in a state to listen anymore.

M: "Listen, Dad wants to talk with you."

With this, she handed the phone to Pankaj, and Parthiv adjusted his tone, controlling the anger and tears in his eyes. Now he understood the reason behind Kartheeka and Vikas' missed calls.

Pj: "Parthiv, we couldn't contact you considering the work you had. Moreover, we came to know a bit late as we didn't have our mobile with us. After Rajiv explained, we immediately booked them the flight tickets so they could reach quickly. It's not like we ignored them; it was a bit difficult to communicate with them, considering the remote area we are in now. I suggest you to visit them as they need someone from our family, and we couldn't make it right now. So, if you can complete your trip, try to meet them and support them this time, like the way they stood for us when you were hospitalized."

P: "You don't need to explain that, Dad. I am going to meet them anyway, as my trip was finally completed, and I would like to talk with the doctors and try to shift the hospital if needed. I am leaving as soon as possible, and don't worry about her, I will handle the situation, so complete your trip peacefully."

He cut the call and got booked for the immediate flight. He packed his luggage, including the gifts he brought for her, and left the room to catch the plane. He was so involved in the details of the accident and tried so hard to control the tears. He directly reached the hospital, which Kartheeka pinged those details, and as soon as he approached the I.C.U.,  his steps were falling slowly.

His heartbeat is increasing, and he can hear his thuds. Wiping off the sweat and tears on his face, he made his way nervously. He can see the concern and surprise in everyone's eyes, but that doesn't matter to him now.

After knowing that she would be under observation for the next 8 hours, he couldn't control himself anymore and asked Rajiv,

"Uncle, can I check her once?"

He exchanged glances with his wife and nodded hesitantly. Vaishnavi and Vikas felt strange to see Parthiv's concern, and the way he pleaded brought a lot of questions and doubts. Kartheeka, who was aware of everything, smiled a little and opened the door for him.

The moment he stepped inside, all he could hear was the beeping machines around her bed. Closing the curtains behind him, he slowly took the steps to her and froze for a second. All those bleeding wounds that covered the major portion of her body, the scratches and some cuts on both cheeks, on top of that, with an oxygen mask, and those cuts and blood stains which are visible on her forehead, apart from the major dressing they did. He kneeled near her bed and took her hand gently into his, which had a cannula.

He slowly rubbed his thumb over her knuckles, which gave him a rough touch, and he could feel some tiny scratches there. As tears started to roll down his eyes, with a blurred vision, he could see that her heartbeat was less than 40. He couldn't hold back anymore and completely broke down in front of her. With his head leaning on her palm,

"I am so sorry, Deepu. I failed to protect you."
