Author's pov:

The operation lasted six long hours. Every minute crawled like a lifetime. No one moved from their place, not even to breathe.

Shivani sat at the doors of the OT, her back hunched, eyes dry from crying, her soul hollow with fear.

Adhi quietly walked up and extended a cup of juice to her, his hand trembling slightly. But Shivani gently shook her head. She couldn't eat, couldn't drink.. how could she when he was battling for his life behind that door?

Adhi didn't press her.

Arha and Vaidehi moved around with quiet understanding, offering the drink to the elders. At first, Gauri refused, but after a moment's pause, she took it. One by one, the others did the same-because grief takes strength, and even pain needs breath to stay alive.

But Shivani... she sat frozen.

Until something inside her stirred.

Slowly, she stood and walked away, unnoticed. Her legs felt heavy, her steps uncertain, but her heart led her to the washroom. She stepped inside and locked the door behind her. The silence hit her like a wave.

She looked into the mirror.

What she saw wasn't herself.

It was a broken girl with bandages on her forehead, red marks around her neck, and eyes so swollen and tired, they no longer sparkled. Dried blood clung to her hands, a cruel reminder of what she'd almost lost.

She stared at the girl in the mirror, then whispered to her reflection, a voice full of cracks and years of bottled pain.

" Papa was right... it all happened because of me."

Her throat choked, tears spilling again.

" I took my mother the moment I came into this world. That's what he said... That's why he hated me. Who wouldn't hate the reason.... the person you love the most disappears forever?"

" I deserve that hate... I was born with it."

She sobbed, clutching the sink, her shoulders shaking.

"Vaidehi was right too. The day I entered that house... I brought nothing but pain. Dadi and Abhimanyu and manu got hurt. Everything collapsed. And now him... lying there, unconscious... because of me."

She looked down at her hands again.

"What if I died? It wouldn't matter. But if he... if he dies... what about me?"

She tilted her head back, eyes to the ceiling.

"Please, God... just save him. I'll go away. I'll leave. I'll remove the bad luck from his life.. I will remove myself from his life. Just don't take him. Please, I'm begging you..."

She opened her eyes slowly, her face hardening with resolution.

The reflection in the mirror flashed before her...

The ghost of her childhood. The girl who always stood alone, never picked, never hugged. Who lay on hospital beds, unseen and unloved. And then came him.
