Author's pov:
As the sky dipped into the deepening night, Abhimanyu stood on the open terrace balcony, his gaze fixed on the sunset. Birds glided home across the glowing horizon, and the cool evening breeze brushed against his skin. For the first time in a long while, he felt a quiet sense of peace.
Shivani, fresh from her shower and dressed in a simple kurti, walked into the kitchen. She prepared a cup of coffee for him and tea for herself.. unaware that Abhimanyu no longer preferred coffee. He had quietly shifted to tea, only because she loved it more.
On the terrace, Abhimanyu leaned against the railing and closed his eyes. Old memories rushed back, his heart heavy with pain and ache. He opened them only when his phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, he sighed.
"Dadi..." he answered softly, eyes still on the fading sunlight.
"Abhi... how are you?" her voice carried the worry of two long years. She knew how he had suffered after Shivani left, how he had cried silently, how broken he had been.
"I'm fine, Dadi. How are you all?"
"We're okay, beta. And... how is Shivani? I know she may never forgive us, but at least let me talk to her once. I want to ask for forgiveness. What we did was wrong... all of us."
Abhimanyu exhaled deeply. "Dadi, do you really think she can forgive us? What happened wasn't small. She gave her whole heart to our family.. owned us, but we failed her. Maa claimed Shivani was like a daughter, but when the time came, she didn't stand by her.
Vaidehi trusted an outsider over Shivani, despite calling her sister. And I... I failed her the most. She loved me innocently, completely... and we broke her trust. Even if she forgives us, I don't think I can forgive myself."
He let out everything he had held inside. As they continued talking, the city lights flickered on, filling the streets below with tiny sparks of gold.
Shivani walked onto the terrace carrying two mugs. She sat beside him and handed him his drink. He smiled softly as he accepted it.
"Who were you talking to?" she asked, taking a sip of her tea.
"Dadi," he replied, still watching the sunset.
"How is she?" Shivani asked, memories of Rajasthan flashing in her mind.
"She's fine."
"And everyone else?" she asked gently, and her question made him turn to look at her.
"What do you think? Do you think they're fine?" he asked quietly.
"Maybe..." she murmured, taking another sip.
"Hmm... maybe." Guilt tightened his chest. He swallowed. "Manu has started going to school," he added softly.
She turned to him with a faint smile.
"How is Mumma?" she asked, thinking about Gauri despite everything that happened. His heart pinched at her kindness.
"She's fine too."
"And my father?" Her voice trembled, eyes moist but holding back tears.
Abhimanyu inhaled slowly. "He has become lean... maybe age, maybe guilt. His health isn't good. After you left, a lot has changed. I think he finally realised his mistake."
"What's the use now, Abhimanyu?" she whispered. "Realising it after ruining everything... it's too late."
Her voice cracked. "What I lost will never come back. My childhood... it was filled with pain and regret. Losing my mother the moment I was born... being blamed for her death... growing up like an orphan while having a father..."
