[A\N: I feel like I don't write about Teyana and her son enough so here you go. And the character of King was changed once again.]
(Friday August 14th)
Teyana."I don't know I guess I just don't want his curls hanging all down his face, I want him to have a shape up but I want him to have a thick curly top." I explain to the barber.
"Right I feel you. When's the last time her got his hair washed?" He asked.
"Last night." I furrowed my eyebrows as I answered wondering why that is relevant. "Is this his first haircut?"
"Yeah, well he's gotten it snipped with scissors before but nothing really major."
"Alright, he'll be no longer than thirty minutes depending on how still he sits, at the most 45 minutes."
"Alright. I'm not gonna pick him up, his dad is just so you know."
"Cool."
"Okay. Bye baby." I wave to King. "Mommy!"
"What babe?"
"I don't want you to go."
"I have to you need to sit here and get your hair cut and daddy will pick you up when you're down."
"But mommy." King whines. I roll my eyes as a tear falls from his eye. "I ain't telling you again King, I'll see you later."
His lip quivered but he doesn't want to cry because of what I just told him.
She sniffs. "Bye mommy."
"Bye baby, I love you."
"Love you too mommy." I shake my head in shame and leave the barbershop.
*
I parked my car next to Demetrius's. He and King was sitting in the front seat King on Demetrius's lap pretending to drive the car, and Demetrius blasting Yo Gotti's I Know song loudly outside of the elementary school building.
I shake my head in shame and get out. I knock on his window.
He smirked and rolled down his window.
"What's up. Why your car filled with so many JCPenny's bags?"
"Damn you all in my car. I just went school clothes shopping for King."
"Oh."
"Yeah why is your car filled with so many Jordan boxes?"
He chuckled. "I had to buy King some new shoes for school."
"You are not serious. Deme there's more than 10 boxes of shoes in there."
"14 to be exact."
"Ridiculous."
"Come on King." They both get out the car.
We both held onto either of King's hands.
"What's his teacher's name?" Deme asked.
"Ms. Murphy!" King was glad to answer before I got a chance.
"He's in the orange wing."
"Alright."
"Ms. Murphy." Deme repeats as we search for her class room.
"There it is." I point to the door.
"Cool."
King walked in the class room first.
"Oh look there's his name." I pointed out the name tag designed into an apple stuck onto the door.
"Hi! I'm your teacher, Ms. Murphy. What's your name?"
"King." King mumbles.
"King, right. We are going to have a great year King." Ms. Murphy had a bit of a Spanish accent but most of everybody in Pico Rivera does.
Deme and I explored his classroom while King bonded with his teacher.
"They have iPads, that's not fair."
"Why isn't it fair?"
"Because I ain't have iPads when I was in Kindergarten." I quit entertaining Demetrius's foolery and find King's desk and lockers.
A few minutes later we we're ready to leave. Today was only a back to school night.
"Thanks for coming." I hug Deme as he kisses my cheek.
"No problem. Bye. Oh and I'm gonna drop these shoes off at your house soon."
"Alright bye."
*
(August 24th)"Can you lace these?" I drop a pair of navy blue Converses on Deme's lap along with white shoe laces.
"Yeah."
"Demetrius I don't understand why you came over here so early."
"You told me 8 o'clock."
"But I text you last night and told you that his school doesn't start until eight thirty so you can come at eight fifteen. Now you're stuck here for thirty minutes."
"Not necessarily stuck here, I have a car. Where's King at?"
"Upstairs, still asleep." I answer beginning to make breakfast.
"You need help doing anything?" He asked as he sits the laced shoes on the chair.
"Yeah can you cook while I get King ready?"
"Umm I guess so." He took over the stove as I rushed upstairs.
I squat at King's bedside and shook him.
"Baby wake up."
He fluttered his eyes open.
"Mommy, is today school?" Was his first words.
"Yup today is the big day baby."
He stood up and stretched. I followed him to the bathroom and helped him brush his teeth. When he was done he put on jeans, a navy blue shirt, and the Converses.
"I got a surprise for you downstairs." I said referring to his dad making King rush down stairs and jump into his daddy's arms and shout DADDY!
*
I walked into the downstairs bathroom and unwrapped my hair and then took the pin curls out, letting my hair fall to the middle of my back.
"Deme take our picture." I demand and hand him my phone. I took a picture kissing King's cheek and one of me hugging him.
I strapped my daughter inside her car seat.
"Don't touch my radio boy." I smack Deme's hand as he tried to change the station.
"I don't listen to this type of music."
"Well we are not in you car. What you listen to?"
"Let me see your CDs." I handed him my CD case. He picked Jay Z's Watch The Throne. He inserted it in and blasted the first song, dancing to it until I turned it down. "No, we ain't doing all that. My daughters asleep."
He turned it back up a little. He looked in my rearview mirror at King and pointed to him. I look at King and see him doing that same dance that his dad had just did.
I laughed and pulled off.
When we got to the school I told Demetrius to take another picture.
As he took one an older lady asked, "Would you like me take a picture of all of you?"
"Oh yes please."
I handed her my phone. Deme put King on his shoulders and wrapped his arm around my neck as I smiled for the camera and oddly I felt like a happy family.
