He felt his heart leap. Why in the world was he happy? He opened his mouth to speak but she interrupted him.
“I know this is too much to ask from you, Alex. But please, just…trust me on this”.
He swallowed again, trying to find the words to say.
“Why me?”.
She laughed.
“I wouldn’t want anyone else”.
Her cheeks turned red, he felt his went red too. He wanted to tell her how much she meant to him, how much he loved her. He wanted to kiss her right there. He forgot that her hand was on his. He laced his fingers between hers. He prayed that she wouldn’t pull away. She didn’t.
Silence fell between them, but it wasn’t an awkward silence. He wanted to hold her forever. It was as if his hands were meant to hold hers.
“Don’t tell Papa, okay?”.
“He’s going to go wild when you get pregnant”.
She smiled sadly. “I know”.
“Do you still want to go through this?”.
She nodded.
“Why?”.
She didn’t answer. Instead, she stared dreamily at a space.
“Alex…”. She sounded like she would cry.
“I’m right here” he gripped her hand tightly.
“You always are”.
She smiled, her blue eyes twinkled despite the sadness in them.
“And I always would”.
