“Pretty roses”
The little blonde haired girl holding my hand said. I knelt down and kissed her cheek.
“Now, give those pretty yellow roses to Mama”.
She put down the bouquet on the tombstone of my daughter. I also placed a bouquet of red roses for my wife.
“Grandpa, what are these leafy things in Mama’s pretty roses?”.
“Those are ferns, Maple”.
“So pretty!”.
I laughed then hugged her tight.
“Go to your Daddy, ok?”.
She nodded then skipped away.
I faced the two tombstones. I looked at Heather’s then whispered “Our first grandchild. She is such a gem. Just like Lizzie. I miss you, my love”.
I looked at Lizzie’s. “Thank you. For teaching me how to be a father. I love you my little Fern”.
I didn’t notice that Maple returned to my side. She asked
“Who are you talking to, Grandpa?”.
I lifted her and placed her on my shoulders.
“I was talking to your mother”.
The little girl looked up then said.
“They’re smiling at you now, Grandpa”.
