El's POV:

I was in a deep sleep, but then, something made me wake up. I open my eyes and see that Max is not in the bed. I figured she might have just went to the bathroom, but that's when I noticed the door to the bathroom was open and the light was off, so she wasn't there.

Maybe she got hungry and went to the kitchen. I got up and checked, but she wasn't there, either.

Me: "Max, where are you?"

I checked every other room in the house, but there was no sign of Max.

Where could she be?

That's when I heard a noise from outside. Was it an intruder, or a demo?

Whatever it was, it's going down.

I went back to the kitchen and grabbed a knife in case my powers weren't enough. I looked out the window and I saw nothing but a dark figure. It didn't look like a Demo, but it was something, and I'm going to find out what.

I slowly opened the door, then crept up on the figure with knife in hand.

Me: "Freeze!"

The figure stopped.

Me: "Put your hands where I can see them."

The figure slowly put their hands up, and that's when I notice the green-painted nails. Wait...

Could it be...?

Me: "Max?"

The person slowly turned around, and it was her after all.

Max: "Hi, El."

She puts her hands down, and I put my weapon down.

Me: "What are you doing out here so late, and why are you wearing that hoodie? It's not cold."

Max: "Oh, uh... I just... wanted to take a little walk. I I would've invited you, but... I didn't want to interrupt your sleep."

Me: "Oh..."

Before I said anything else, I looked down and saw something else that caught my eye. I picked up her foot and held it close to me.

Me: "Max... what is on your foot?"

I look at her other foot.

Me: "On this one, too? Max, what did you step in?"

She just chuckles and takes my hands, helping me stand back up.

Max: "It's okay, El, it's just mud."

I am a little confused.

Me: "What is mud?"

Her face looks like realization that no one has ever explained what it is to me.

Max: "Oh... you don't know."

I shook my head.

Max: "Well... it's what you get when you mix water and dirt, or soil, together. The water softens it, and it creates a soft and slightly sticky substance. That's mud."

It all made sense to me.

Me: "Oh..."

She nods.

Me: "Do other people step in mud, like with no shoes on?"

Max: "Oh, yeah, a lot of people do it. It feels so good to do it, it's like a stress reliever for when you have a bad day, or if you just decide to do it for fun."

Me: "Stress..."

I think back to something that happened earlier today.

Me: "Like what you told me about earlier, right? You held me and cried because you were under a lot of stress, so it was like I was the stress reliever."

Max: "Exactly."

Me: "I get it now."

I stepped forward and gave her a hug. She hugged back.

Max: *chuckles* "El..."

I smiled.

Me: "What? I just wanted to hug you."

Max: "I know... I love when you hug me. It's like I'm hugging a cute teddy bear."

I pull away, confused about what that meant.

Me: "Teddy... bear?"

She smiles softly.

Max: "Oh, El..."

She rests her hands on my face and kisses me. I kiss back and bury my hands in her beautiful, red hair. We pull away and press our foreheads together.

Max: "I'll never understand how you can be so cute."

I blushed.

Me: "I'm cute? No..."

I brush a strand of hair out of her face.

Me: "You're the cute one."

I lightly tap her nose.

Me: "Boop."

She giggles, her freckled cheeks growing slightly rosy.

Max: "Where did you learn to do that?"

Me: "I saw Nancy do it to Robin, so I do it now."

Max: "Did Robin smile?"

I nodded.

Me: "Very big smile."

Max: "Good."

Me: "I tried doing it to Joyce- er, I mean, to my mom, last week, and she thought it was cute, too. She smiled very big, too."

Max: "Good, because anything you say or do deserves a big smile from all of us."

Me: "Even if I'm killing monsters or bad men?"

Max: "Especially when you kill monsters or bad men."

I smile very big now, then it slowly dies down as I look away when I think of something to ask, but I'm not sure I should. Max notices and she gently lifts my head up by my chin with her fingers.

Max: "What's on your mind, Ellie?"

Me: "Umm... would it be okay if I... tried doing what you were doing out here?"

Max: "What, walking in the mud?"

I nod.

Max: "Of course, baby, I would love for you to try it. We'll do it in the morning, though, because it's late and we need sleep."

Me: "Good point."

I open the door to let us both inside, but Max is hesitant.

Me: "What's wrong, Max?"

Max: "I don't want to get the floor dirty."

This gives me an idea.

Me: "Hold on..."

I come up next to her and sweep her off her feet. She is surprised, but is happy with the gesture.

Max: "Perfect."

I carry her inside and close the door with my foot. I take her to the kitchen to wash the mud off, then we go back into the bedroom and snuggle with each other in bed before falling asleep.
