Max's POV:

A loud clap of thunder suddenly scares me awake. My eyes are brimming with tears, I try to cover my ears with my pillow, but it does nothing. I decide to go downstairs in hopes of finding ways to make this situation better.

Oh, also, I'm at Steve Harrington's house. After Dustin managed to get him hooked on D&D, they decided to have a themed party, including Mike, Will and Lucas. El came along, too, to support Mike. Nancy and Robin couldn't make it because they're on a date. The rest of the party were all down in the basement in the middle of a campaign. I decided not to join because Lucas and I aren't together anymore, and plus, I couldn't get into D&D, so I was sleeping in a guest room upstairs.

Well, when I got to the kitchen, I noticed that not everyone was down there now. The only other person in the kitchen was...

Me: "El?"

I notice her leaning against the counter with a glass of water. She turns around and sees me.

Me: "What are you doing in here?"

El shrugs.

El: "I was thirsty. How come you aren't down there with everyone else?"

Something about hearing El's voice just makes my heart beat fast.

Me: "I, uh... I just didn't really feel like it."

El looks like she notices something about me. She sets down her glass and comes closer, I looked down, but she gently took her hand and lifted my face up by my chin so I was looking at her. She sees my tear-stained face.

El: *softly* "You were crying... why?"

I didn't answer at first because I was too focused on the feeling of El using her thumb to gently wipe my tears away.

Me: "The... the thunderstorms. They're... a little too loud for me."

El: *softly* "Oh..."

She doesn't question it further after that.

El: "Would you like to come down to the basement and join us? I'm sure Lucas would-"

Me: "No."

El looks a little surprised by my answer.

Me: *sighs* "He and I... aren't together anymore."

El took a bit to respond, and I honestly don't blame her. She lets go of my chin after realizing she was still holding onto it.

El: "I'm sorry, Max."

Me: "It's not your fault."

El's POV:

This feels like a bomb just dropped on me. Max and Lucas aren't a thing anymore? It seemed like they were perfect for each other. But... I guess things change.

Me: "Would it help if it was just us two, then?"

She looked like she wasn't expecting me to ask that.

Max: "I... I don't think you want that."

No matter how much I hate to admit it, that hurt. I didn't tell her that Mike and I ending up splitting apart as well, but still. I had to make this situation easier. I gently took Max's hand in mine.

El: *softly* "I do, Max. I really do."

She looked like she was blushing a little. She even flashed a tiny smile.

Max: "Okay... let's go."

She takes me by my hand and leads me upstairs to the room she was staying in. She closes the door once I'm in.

Max: "You've worn those clothes all day, right? They must be getting uncomfortable. Here..."

She reaches into her bag and takes out a pajama shirt and pants. When she handed them to me, I took them, and my fingers brushed up against hers. Now it was me blushing.

Me: "Th-thank you."

I took off my old clothes and put the new ones on. When I did, I saw that Max was turned around. I thought girls didn't care about seeing other girls without clothes, but I didn't wanna question it.

Me: "I'm done."

She turns around and I see that her face is a deeper red, but I assume it was from the storms. Speaking of which, another clap of thunder came around, frightening Max again. She yelped and covered her ears. I went over to her and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her closer to me, giving her the comfort she might need.

She buries her face my neck, and I feel her shaky breath. I was so sad for Max at this moment, I had no idea something like this would scare her. I feel her tremble in my arms, choked sobs escaping her lips, but I just kept my arms around her.

Me: *softly* "Do you want me to hold you until you fall asleep?"

I feel Max nodding her head. I lied us both back onto the pillow. I adjusted us so that she was more comfortable. I covered her ears so that the noise wouldn't be as loud for her. It worked, as she started drifting off to sleep soon after, her sobs subsiding and her tears drying up.

She looks so cute when she sleeps. I fell asleep soon after, hoping for Max to feel better in the morning.
