I should have known something was wrong the moment Shalnark asked me to meet him alone. He was smiling, and that was the first problem. I mean, Shalnark was always smiling, but this one was different.

It was the kind of smile that made me immediately suspicious, like he had already planned something and I was going to regret agreeing to whatever came next.

"What are you planning?" I asked.

He placed a hand against his chest with an innocent expression. "Planning? What do you mean by that? I don't plan anything, never."

"You're lying." He put a hand on his chest and pretended to be in pain.

"Ah, I'm hurt!"

"Shal."

"Fine. I have an idea." He sighed in defeat.

I narrowed my eyes.

"What kind of idea?" I questioned.

"The kind that will finally make you realize something."

I already didn't like where this was going but I was actually curious on what this plan was.

"What?"

He leaned closer and lowered his voice. "You need to see how Feitan feels about you."

My face immediately became warm.

"W-what do you mean?"

"Oh come on, I know the two of you liked each other but neither of you are confessing."

Feitan... likes me?

Ever since waking up, I couldn't stop thinking about those words.

I love you

I had heard them while I was trapped somewhere between consciousness and sleep. I knew it was Feitan, I don't know how but I just knew it. But he hadn't said them after I woke up and whenever I tried bringing it up, he changed the subject, disappeared, or gave me some ridiculous excuse.

So maybe... maybe I did need to understand what he really felt before I go crazy thinking whether it was an imagination or not.

"What's your plan?"

Shalnark's smile widened. "You'll see."

I should have known that answer meant trouble but who am I to judge. A few hours later, Shalnark brought me to an empty area outside the hideout.

There were several members of the Troupe there, though nobody seemed particularly interested in telling me what was happening. Machi was standing near a tree while Franklin was carrying a shovel beside her.

I stared at him.

"What's with the shovel?" I asked him and he looked at Shalnark, then back at me.

"I also don't know why." He shrugged.

"Just trust me." Shalnark winked at him and I smell trouble.

"You could at least tell us what it's about." I stated and he chuckled.

"No need to worry, you only need to die."

"Excuse me, what?"

He smiled. "I meant, we're going to pretend you died."

I stared at him for several seconds as my brain refused to process what he'd just said.

"Feitan is away on a mission." He started exlaining. "And he'll be back tomorrow so we're going to make him believe you died while he was gone."

My mouth fell open. "And why would we do that?"

"You've been wondering if he meant those three words right?" He wiggled his eyebrow and I felt my face flushed.

"Wait, how did you know?"

"I may have planted a listening device on your bed."

"You wha-"

"BUT that doesn't matter, what matters is for this plan to work so you can finally get your closure." He cut me off and I stared at him for a while wondering if I was hallucinating. "Trust me, if he comes back and thinks you're dead, you'll finally see what happens."

"And if he doesn't react?" I asked the worst outcome possible.

Shalnark's expression softened. "He will."

He sounded completely certain and that made me believed in this whatever thing he was planning. It was ridiculous, but somehow it worked.

They created a fake story where I had been injured while Feitan was away and hadn't survived.  There was even a fake report, which Danchou prepared. Not sure how Shalnark got him into this. Kortopi created the fake body while Pakunoda and Machi set up a fake funeral.

And just like that, Shalnark somehow convinced everyone to participate even though his plan sounded ridiculous.

I stood behind a group of trees while watching my own fake funeral. This was officially the strangest thing I had ever experienced yet somehow my heart was pounding. I don't know if I was nervous or not but I was hoping this plan would work.

"This is insane." I told Shalnark and he grinned.

"You'll thank me later."

The time had finally arrived and I heard footsteps. My heart immediately began beating faster as I knew that Feitan had returned. He walked toward the group with his usual expression like he was uninterested with everything like nothing in the world could surprise him.

Then when he noticed everyone gathered together, he stopped. His eyes scanned the room for a moment, as if he was looking for something or someone, before he spoke.

"What's this?"

Nobody answered, they were all committed to their little acts to make this theatre works. Feitan's eyes moved across the group, then finally he noticed the grave.

As if noticing something was wrong, his expression changed a little bit. You may not see it because he was wearing a mask, but his eyes tells it all. He looked around the room once more, not sure if he was looking for me, before his gaze stayed fixed on the coffin.

"Who?" The tone in his voice was somewhat raspy and I heard him clearing his throat.

Shalnark stepped forward, his expression was unusually serious. As if he waited all his life for this moment being dedicated to the fake roll he created.

"Feitan..." He paused. "I don't know how to tell you this."

Feitan stared at him. "Where Y/n?"

There was a moment of silence before Pakunoda and Machi started crying. Like literally crying where you can see tears from their eyes.

Damn, they are really acting so great

If I didn't know that this play was set out for me, I would've believed immediately.
