Y/n POV The Next Morning Los Angeles, California
I woke to an empty space beside me.
For a moment, I lay still, listening to the faint noises coming from elsewhere in Brooklyn's apartment.
Cabinets opened and closed in the kitchen. Water ran briefly. A phone vibrated somewhere nearby before stopping.
My flight departed in three hours.
The suitcases lined up near the bedroom door served as an unwanted reminder.
I pulled on a hoodie and followed the smell of breakfast into the kitchen. Brooklyn stood near the stove wearing an oversized T-shirt, staring down at her phone while something cooked in a pan behind her.
"You burning something," I said.
Brooklyn didn't look up. "I know."
"You gone turn around?"
"In a minute."
"Brooklyn."
I crossed the room and switched off the burner before the food could start smoking. When I turned around, Brooklyn was still reading whatever filled her screen.
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
"You don't ignore burning food over nothing."
Brooklyn locked the phone and set it facedown on the counter.
"I thought you had to pack."
"I'm already packed."
"Then you should probably head to the airport early."
I studied her.
Only a few hours earlier, Brooklyn had been trying to convince me to cancel the flight. Now, she could barely look in my direction.
"Where this attitude come from?"
"I don't have an attitude."
"You definitely do."
Brooklyn picked up the pan and carried it toward the sink. "Your phone been going off all morning."
"I was asleep."
"Clearly."
"What are people saying?"
Instead of answering, Brooklyn picked up her phone and opened a video. She placed it on the counter between us.
Dashae's face filled the screen.
He was live.
"I'm not speaking on nobody specifically," he told his viewers. "But some people come around acting genuine when they really chasing attention. They know where the cameras at. They know who got motion. Then they get close to somebody in your family and suddenly everybody supposed to act like it ain't calculated."
