Beyoncé POV
The bedroom door clicked shut behind me, and for the first time all day, I was alone. Or at least I wanted to be.
My entire body ached as I stood in front of the bathroom mirror removing the last of my jewelry.
The mascara I'd washed away hours ago had left faint shadows beneath my eyes, and no amount of expensive skincare or makeup tricks could hide how exhausted I looked. I barely recognized the woman staring back at me.
Not because she looked older, but because she looked broken.
I couldn't stop thinking about Y/N.
Sitting on that ledge.
Looking down at the water.
The terror I felt when Julius told me where she'd gone. The crack in her voice when she admitted she was tired. The way she called me Mama.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of wondering what she looked like when she cried, what her voice sounded like when she was hurting, whether she laughed like her father or smiled like me. And now I knew.
A lump formed in my throat.
I quickly looked away from my reflection before the guilt swallowed me whole.
I had just changed into one of my oversized sleep shirts when the bedroom door opened behind me. I didn't have to turn around to know who it was.
Shawn.
Of course.
I silently walked toward the dresser and opened one of the drawers, hoping that if I ignored him long enough he'd take the hint and leave. Deep down, I already knew he wouldn't.
"Bey." I grabbed my moisturizer and unscrewed the lid.
Ignored him.
"Beyoncé." His voice was softer this time. Careful. Cautious. Like he knew one wrong word could make things worse.
