Blessed Amen Carter
Six Months Later
New York City
Y/n 'Jenn' Carter
Trying again sounded real good inside that hot-ass rental car in Memphis.
It sounded even better once Gloria's hair was done, Blessed was excited, and the three of us were boarding a flight to New York like some picture-perfect little family.
For the first few weeks, we almost were.
Then real life caught up with us.
"Jenn!"
I opened my eyes but didn't move. Between the sunlight forcing its way through the curtains and Gloria yelling my name from somewhere downstairs, I already knew peace wasn't waiting on me.
"Jenn, I know you hear me!"
"I hear you!" I yelled back, voice heavy with sleep.
"Then get up!"
I dragged myself out of bed, pulling a hoodie over the tank top I had slept in. The clock on the nightstand read 9:47 a.m.
I had gotten home from the studio less than three hours ago.
By the time I made it downstairs, Gloria was standing in the kitchen fully dressed with her purse over her shoulder. Blessed sat at the island eating cereal, swinging her little legs while cartoons played on her iPad.
Gloria's eyes landed on me.
"You just waking up?"
"Clearly."
"I called you eight times last night."
"My phone died."
"Of course it did."
I opened the refrigerator and grabbed a bottle of water. "Good morning to you too."
