The next afternoon...

Y/n POV

Sighing as I unlocked the door, thinking about what may or may not be after this. I had decided to leave last night and book a hotel room to get my mind together. I had to think about my future and what I wanted that to look like. And the part I dreaded the most was right in-front of me,

This talk...

"Morning'" I spoke lowly setting my keys on the stand before coming out of my shoes leaving them by the entrance.

"Morning," she spoke back, voice flat - like we both knew what was coming but neither of us wanted to say it.

The tension was still there.

I nodded, lowering into the chair across from her. For a moment, I just stared - not at her, but through her. I could barely find the words, so I just started with the truth.

"I know I haven't been the best version of myself lately... I'm not blind to it." My voice cracked on the end. I paused. "I've been hurt. A lot. And maybe I haven't been handling it in the best ways. But what's been hurting even more... is that you keep reminding me of how I'm not myself. Pointing out what's changed in me. And the thing is..." I took a shaky breath, "You're not seeing the parts of you that have changed too."

She stayed quiet, watching me. But not like before - this time it looked like she already knew what I was about to say.

"You lied to me, Sofia." I continued, my voice lower. "Or maybe you just didn't say anything. About the possibility that you might not be able to have kids. That's... not a small thing. Especially not when we're planning a whole life together."

Her mouth opened slightly, but I lifted my hand gently. "I'm not done."

She nodded, lips pressing together.

"And you still won't go get tested. You're not even ready to face it. And I get it... I really do. That shit is terrifying. But you don't get to withhold that from me and then act like I'm the one not showing up for us."

My throat tightened. I had to look away for a second before I could keep going.

"And these ultimatums... Sofia, it's not fair. It's toxic. It's not who we are. First, it's 'I need to meet your mom before we get married.' Now it's, 'I need her at the wedding or we can't get married at all.' That's not love. That's leverage."

I looked at her now. Really looked.

"And you might not mean it that way. I want to believe you don't. Because you've never been this person. Not since the day I met you. Which makes me think this... this whole thing is bigger than just me. That maybe you got your own wounds you need to deal with. Stuff I can't heal. Stuff you need to face."

She went to respond but I shook my head slowly. "I'm not finished."

She leaned back, breathing through her nose, trying to hold it together.

"I think... I think we need to pause the wedding."

The words dropped like bricks between us. I saw her heart drop instantly - her face completely changed. Her eyes filled before I could even blink. My own vision blurred. I looked down as the weight hit my chest like a hammer, my voice trembling.

"I'm not saying I wanna break up..." I said, barely above a whisper. "But I also don't want to pretend like this isn't a break in us. I just think before we move forward, we both need time. Space. To get back to ourselves. I need to figure out how to face my past without dragging you through the worst of me. And you... maybe you need to figure out why you don't trust me enough to be honest with me fully."

She nodded fast, a cry breaking through her lips as she tried to breathe. She was shaking, barely keeping it together. "I understand," she managed, between tears. "I get it..."

I looked at her, practically feeling my heart breaking. "Is there... is there anything you want to say now?"

She wiped her face, but the tears kept falling instantly.

She shook her head. "No."

"Anything else you wanna talk about?" I asked, my own voice fading into a whisper.

She looked down. Her shoulders dropped as she whispered, "No." Then she stood up quietly.

I watched her walk back to the room. She closed the door gently, but then-Her sobs...

Her sobs were loud, broken, uncontrollable - the kind that only happen when something sacred is slipping through your fingers.

I sat frozen for a moment, hand slowly moving to the center of my chest, trying to hold my heart in place. And then my tears came. Finally. The kind that choke you. The kind that steal your breath. The kind the makes you feel like your drowning, screaming underwater.

I cried for her. I cried for me.
I cried for what we could lose.

I cried because for the first time...
I truly felt like I was losing the love of my life.
