"One espresso, please" An old lady mumbled and started rummaging through her bag. "One espresso!"I yelled and Dean gave me a thumbs up as he prepared the coffee. He put the small cup on a tray and stacked it with tissues and sugar. She paid, took the tray and moved the window table. My favorite table.
It's been like this all day. People coming in, ordering basic things, drinking for a while and leaving with a tip! It was a Sunday morning. We decided to take morning shift because we promised Hails we'd take her to the zoo in the afternoon. I love the zoo and the animals and my favorite, monkeys. They're just so adorable!!
"So, we're leaving in an hour" Dean said, standing next to me with his hands crossed. I smiled at him and turned my face back towards the door when I heard a jingle. Dean groaned lightly beside me making me chuckle "Hello!" I exclaimed to the customer. Mom and her boyfriend waltzed in, hand in hand. I immediately felt disgusted. Dean gave me a confused frown and I shrugged. She was giggling way to loudly and it was just gross.
"Ellie?" Mom gasped in shock but continued laughing "What are you doing here?"
"I work here." I mumbled glaring at her and her boyfriend.
He looked in his late thirties, brown gelled hair and boring brown eyes.
"What do you want, babe?" He asked mom and I gagged a little. He called her babe? Ew.
"uhhm, I'll have iced tea, extra ice please" She said smiling but I could tell it was a fake one. She wasn't happy to see me. I get it. It's like no matter how hard I try to be happy, she's the one who always brings me down.
"Make it two" He said and pulled out his wallet and paid. They both took their drinks and walked away.
I stared at the both of them angrily. "Are you okay?" Dean asked and I kicked the counter beneath me as hard as I could, hurting my leg inn the process. "Fuck" I cursed under my breath. "Enough cash registering for the day, come on... " He dragged me away from the cash register and made me stand near the drinks. "I hate her!" I yelled at him "God!" I turned around and stormed inside the storage room trying to calm myself down when I heard the bell jingle signalling the arrival of another customer. I went back outside so that Dean wouldn't work alone.
"Let's go" Dean said hanging the apron at the back of the shop. I mimcked him with a low huff and followed him outside where ...guess what? It started to rain. "I guess no zoo for Hailey, she's going to be devestated" Dean mumbled walking back in to get us an umbrella. Honestly, I didn't care. I really didn'y feel like going to the zoo, especially not after what happened with my mom. Dean and I walked home in complete silence. Neither of us felt like talking. When we reached home, I gave him a quick kiss and hurried inside without even glancing at him. I walked in on my mom sitting at the kitchen yapping away on the phone.
The moment I walked into my room, I felt my chest contract. My eyes bulged in shock as I gasped for air.
"Mom!" I screamed inhaling with a screech. I put my hand in pocket and reached for my phone "Mom!"
"I'm busy Ellie!" She yelled back and I chocked, tears spilling down my cheek as I frantically dialed Deans number.
I put the phone up to my ear and tried inhaling but my wind pipe was completely blocked. My legs gave out and I fell. The phone flew out of my hands and hit the wall. I started kicking the door with my legs making as much noise as possible for my mom to hear. I cried in frustration with my legs still kicking. My vision got blurry and I heard moms voice coming up the stairs "Ellie, I swear to Go- ELLIE!" She yelled and I stopped kicking trying to take in a calm breath but nothing. I couldn't breathe. I took one last look at my mothers frantic face and everything went dark.
