~Mystery~

My head slowly tilted up when I heard the teacher say my name. I hadn't really been paying attention to what had been happening and I hadn't spoken to anyone in the class or on my table near the teacher's desk. But what else was new?
"What did you said sir?" I asked him in a half hearted tone.
"Will you read with Minty?" He asked jerking his head to gesture to the table in the middle of the room. I didn't dare to look at those she-Devils that were Amber and her friends, but looked at the opposite side of the table to see a girl with two nuns in her ginger hair that looked really pretty.

They also looked like a style I saw cutiepiemarzia wear in a video once. Maybe she was a fan, or her mum or another family member was a fan. That would be cool if she was because- no. Stop it Mystery. No one likes you here remember. That ginger girl probably won't either.
"Can't she get a book from the library?" I asked him again with my same time. I did like to read, but I usually did it alone. Except for one tragic even when I first came here...
"No that will waste time." He answered making me sigh defeated then turned to look towards ginger girl.

"Please Mystery." He added and I nodded not having a choice really. Mr Harvey nodded his head to me and gave me a pursed lip smile that both said thank you to me. He then turned over towards the ginger girl again.
"Minty, you can read with Mystery over here." He stated gesturing to me with his thumb. The ginger girl smiled lighting up like the Blackpool illuminations then jumped out of her chair and excitedly scurried over to the spare seat next to me. I shunted away a little as she did then pushed my copy of Of Mice and Men so it was between us.

My gaze was glued to the desk as the legs of the chair scrapped against the floor as she pulled the chair from the desk, and they scrapped again as she shunted it forward now sitting in it.
"Hey!" She said in a voice that was too happy. I glanced at her sideways, seeing that she was grinning at me as well.
"Hello." I muttered back then looked at the book. Please god let this be over soon, I prayed and secretly crossed my fingers on my left hand, the furthest away from the ginger girl.
"Is that of mice and men?" She asked moving it a little closer to her with one hand.
"Yeah, it's my own copy..." I replied slowly, sputtering a bit.

"Cool. An English teacher I had at my old school read this to the class and I really enjoyed it." She almost chirped. I nodded absentmindedly.
"Good to know." I mumbled a little sarcastically then turned the book page to start reading. We were up to the part where Curley's wife meets Lennie and George, just after George spoke to Candy about her, when Minty spoke.
"Why do the men call Curley's wife names like tart and tramp?" She asked me making my gaze break from the book to her.

She was tilting her head and her eyes were filled with fascination.
"Thought you said you read this book." I said bluntly.
"I did," she nodded. "But I just wanna know why." Her American accent was thick and I knew she'd get bullied for that. It wasn't normal here. It was considered weird, and I know from, experience I suppose, that being weird isn't acceptable in this class. She might not last long being bullied either.

~Minty~

"It was because of the way she behaved, the way she dressed and what she said." Mystery replied to me eventually.
"But, wasn't she just lonely and misunderstood?" I asked her again.
"Arguably." She shrugged and looked down at the book to start reading again.
"I actually finished reading The Hobbit not long ago and I really enjoyed it. Have you ever read that?" I asked Mystery trying to break the ice with her. Her head slowly turned to me again and I half expected her to say something mean like Amber said before. But I was wrong thankfully.

"Twice. And I enjoyed it too." she replied making me grin. I saw on her face that there was a little smile, that stayed on her face through the whole of the time we were reading. After we finished reading I had to go back to my original place on the table with Amber and her friends. They did not say anything to me, mean or friendly, but I wasn't bothered. Talking to them wasn't exactly and it meant possibly getting killed. But I did want to talk to Mystery more because she seemed like a person I could be friends with. Hopefully. The rest of the day rolled by like a rolly-poley, or whatever they call it, and the school bell's ring filled echoed through our ears signalling the end of the day.

"Have a good evening guys, safe journey home," Mr Harvey got up while speaking then opened the classroom door.
"And no stopping to get sweets, Kyle." He said seriously while pointing a finger to a boy on the table at the back of the room. Around the room were giggled and I saw a small smile on Mr Harvey's face. He is a good teacher, that I can tell. Hopefully the rest of my class will as well, I thought leaving the class with the other kids who like me now wore their coats and had their bags over their shoulders. But, before I could get out half way down the hall that lead to the exit of the school I was stopped.

"Hey Min-ty!" A voice sung annoyingly and at the same time an oddly large hand clamped onto my shoulder. I was tugged backwards and spun around to see Amber and her two friends. A frown formed on my face as I looked at their faces.
"What is it?" I asked them. Amber grinned at me widely.
"Well we just wanted to say welcome," Amber began then gave me a comforting pat on the back. "We hope you have a brilliant time," she continued patting me harder. "And also, we hope you're nice to everyone and that that will give them a good sign, about you." She finished, hitting me not patting me this time, on the back then they all stepped back with those grins on their faces. I just thanked them then walked away down the hall towards the exit. A frown still faintly on my face.
