After we all finished our toast breakfast Nora took our plates through and the sound of an old horn was sounded outside our house.
"Time to go guys." Nora said as we all grabbed our bags. My bag was on the highest hook and before he went out the door Craig cackled at me while pointing a finger at me. He put it there obliviously, he does it nearly every morning. I sighed and then grabbed the small plastic bin (that was thankfully empty today) and flipped it over so I could stand on it and grab my bag.

Went I did I jumped off the bin landing on my 2 converse covered feet. I then flipped the bin back over and dashed out the orphanage house and down the hard concrete steps. The grubby yellow school bus was about to set off but before the rickety door shut I shoved my bag in the space stopping it. I looked up and called a 'sorry' to the bus driver Mack. Mack was a large black man who wore a blue uniform and a matching blue driving hat. When he saw me he pursed his lips and raised his eye brows at me.

"Mmhhmm?" He said sassily and clicked the button that opened the door. I thanked him and climbed up the steps to sit down.
"You need to hurry up next time kid." He said shaking his head. I sat down about half way on the bus on my own. It set off just as I sat down. I looked around me to see who was on the bus. A lot of the older kids were talking to Craig and the girls were all sat together and were giggling about something I didn't understand. A group of boys singing I think it was.

It didn't take me long to get bored of that and start reading my copy of the hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien. Nora gave it to me and I read it with her sometimes and I read it in class as well. The bus ride to school however was going o be cut short when a loud bang and a pop sound was heard as well as some hissing. I frowned hearing Mack sigh and curse.
"What's wrong Mack?" I asked putting my hobbit book away.
"She broken down on me." He said grabbing his grey tool box and got out off the bus. I followed him and walked on to the road and round to the front of the bus. From the bus engine there was steam and it was the source of the hissing sound.

"Looks like you kids are gonna have to walk to school. You know where it is right minty?" Mack asked me and I nodded. My school, st. Stevens junior and senior school was about 20 minutes away from where we were which was near Times Square. The school was small and the best thing was that we had to walk through part of Central Park and then through the streets of New York to get there. The school wasn't very well known and it was an old building in and among the streets. Across the road from it was a small church that we would regularly have visits. If we would have one today I didn't know.

"I'll get to school on time Mack, don't worry." I said and he nodded. I started to walk and then the other kids got off the bus as well.
"Y'all be careful and make sure you get to school you hear?" Mack said as the other kids lazily got off the bus. They started to walk past me due to their fast pace and my slow one. Mack started work on the bus and I turned to look at him while walking backwards.
"Bye Mack!" I called and waved to him. I then pulled my purple mittens on. He smiled and waved back once. I then started to walk to my school.
