~Minty~

I stayed perfectly still after seeing that girl there before. I don't know why, and I usually wait till I've got to know a person a bit before making my decision if they are nice or not, but I didn't like her. The way she looked at me, it just gave me a bad feeling that made my tummy go all funny. Why was that? Why was that? I kept wondering in my head as Mr Harvey cleared his throat to speak to the class. I then started to wonder, would he be nicer than the dragon lady- I mean the head misstress- or would he be just as mean and yell louder than her (if that was even possible).
"Good morning class." Mr Harvey spoke with a loud voice, that was deep but not scary sounding.

Around the room there was hushed chatter that didn't seem to stop when Mr Harvey spoke.
"I said good morning class!" He said louder but not meanly like the way he spoke to Mrs Peterson. The chatter stopped and everyone looked up at him.
"Good, mor-ning, Mr, Har-vey." The class all said in a slow and dragging voice that made them sound like a group of dumb zombies. Why did they say it so slowly? When form started at my school in New York my teacher would speak normally and come around the tables to say good morning to us. She was nice and the class nice, but this one didn't seem to be. But I could be wrong.

"That's better. Now class," Mr Harvey began slowly waking from the closed classroom door next to where I was stood.
"Today we have a new student with us. This is Minty, and she came here from New York was it?" He looked down at me with a raised eyebrow asking me and I nodded making him nod then look up at the class.
"I want you all to make her feel welcome and help her in lessons alright?" He spoke giving me a tap on the shoulder that did make my tummy feel a little better. It was probably just nerves, but I think I'd be okay.

"Yes, Mr, Har-vey." The class all replied in the same zombie-like tone. I frowned a little wondering why they did that? Did they all have a speaking problem or all need to speak slowly to understand each other? Or did Mr Harvey want them to speak like that? If he did then that's a strange thing to make a class do. None of the teachers in my school in America made us do that. I was pulled out of my thoughts when I heard some giggles come from the blonde girl Amber, and some other girls that were her friends (I knew it was them because I saw them stood with her outside) and because of Mr Harvey speaking to me.

"You can go and sit in the seat on the Amber and her friends are sat on Minty." He told me pointing slightly and I nodded thanking him then walked to my place, that was opposite the three girls, and swallowed to try and make my tummy calm down. I felt my tummy feel weird again because of the looks Amber and her friends were all giving me. Her friends were looking at me like I had a spider or something on my face and I wasn't bothered by it. Amber was looking at me with squinted eyes, a frown and her lips tightly pressed together. It looked like she was thinking hardly, but like her friends was at me as if I had something wrong. This made my nerves worse and me wonder more about them. Specifically Amber.

I looked up at Mr Harvey seeing him sat back down at his desk to flit through some sheets of paper. He didn't seem to mind the fact that some of the kids on the table nearest his desk at the front of the class. The kids on the table at the back and on the tables next to the walls on either sides of the room were chatting as well. The only table that didn't having chatting people on it was my table. Well, Amber and her friends were whispering to each other a bit. Maybe they were going to talk to me. Maybe I should try to talk to them.
"You guys like to talk here, don't you?" I began trying to break the ice with them smiling as best I could.

Amber and her two friends turned painfully slowly to me with looks of disgust and slight shock on their faces. Amber's bright blue eyes seemed to stare at me with a red tint in them before she opened her mouth to speak.
"You can't speak to us." She began speaking with a high pitched, nasally sounding with her left eyebrow raised. I looked at her friends that were sat either side of her with their left eyebrows raised as well just like her.
"Says who?" I asked them titling my head slightly. Surely in this country they have freedom of speech right?

"Err, says me that's who." Amber snapped back. I frowned. This was beyond the mean older girls back in New York that would sometimes pick on me and my friends. But, then again they could think I'm being mean.
"Why don't you want me to talk to you?" I asked her with my head still tilted.
"Because, me and my friends don't talk to people like you. Amber's club doesn't talk to people like you." Amber said smirking. The way she said it made her sound like she was a celebrity. Was she maybe a celebrity of some kind, or perhaps a big head, as Mac would have said. I was about to say something else when Mr Harvey spoke making us all look over to him.

"Alright kids. I want you to get out your reading books and read together. I'll let you know when to stop." He told us removing his smart suit jacket then around the room kids started to get books out of their shoulder bags and backpacks to read. I didn't have a reading book so, I would have to ask someone to share a book to read with me. I looked over to Amber and her friends seeing them all reading pink princess books that made my eyes hurt a bit because of the brightness of it. I wonder if everything they see is pink? That must have been miserable. Hello, my favourite colour is green people. Pink isn't the colour for me. The only exception is pjs because they can look fabulous.

I looked over at Mr Harvey's desk seeing that he had his head down and www working, but out of pure luck I was able to catch his gaze. My eyes were wide and he was frowning, able to see there was a problem. I held my hands out in front of me with my palms facing upwards in front of me as if I were reading an invisible book. He seemed to get what I was trying to tell him because his eyes went wide and he nodded his head then looked over to the table that was placed near his desk. He then moved in his chair to lean forward to speak to the kids on that table.
"Mystery, would you like to read with Minty?" He asked and I frowned. I've heard some interesting names, but Mystery is a new one.
