LUKE'S POV:

"Luke please dress a little nicer than that." Mum groaned, peaking into my room to find me straightening out my clothes in front of a mirror.

"I look fine." I whined.

"No." She growled, digging through the closet until she pulled out a navy-blue polo. I shook my head no but she was persistent.

"Put it on." She demanded, leaving my room in a hurry. Ugh what was the big deal it was just a small diner. I pulled the gray polo over my head, fumbling with the collar in my hands. There was a soft rapping on my door.

"Can I come in?" Sheila's angelic voice filled the room.

"Uhh yeah sure." I said, hastily running my fingers through my hair.

"Well don't you look spiffy." She smiled. I watched her walk up behind me in the mirror. Her hair was down and curled, her brunette ringlets reaching just past her breasts. She had light makeup on and form fitting flower dress. Sheila was beautiful.

"You don't look bad yourself." I grinned. She put her hand on my shoulder and turned me to face her. Her fingers worked expertly to straighten my collar.

"There. That's better." She smiled, proud of her work. Her body was so close to mine. I just wanted to grab her by the waist and pull her lips to mine... her pretty brown eyes darted to my lips and both of us flushed red...

"Kids! We're leaving!" Mum shouted from the bottom of the stairs, causing us to jump apart.

The diner was your typical hole-in-the-wall arrangement. It reminded me a little of a log cabin and had a lot of american themes. No wonder why Gus likes this place. I rolled my eyes inwardly. Sheila's hand brushed mine as if sensing my irritation and i immediately cooled down.

A pretty waitress led us to our booth where we plopped down ungracefully and began to read menus. Sheila was across from me, knees brushing mine shyly. We grinned slowly at each other. She blushed and looked down at her menu, but I knew she wasn't thinking about food.

"What can i get started for you?" The waitress asked, pulling out a pad and pen.

"I'll have the steak, mashed potatoes and green beans." Gus smiled, folding his menu and returning it to her with a big, all-to-american smile.

"I'll just have the Caesar Salad." Mum said.

"Same as her." Sheila smiled.

"Uhh do you have a Vegemite sandwich?" I asked. The waitress frowned.

"Uhm no, sorry we don't carry Vegemite. We have a peanut butter sandwich though! It's on the kids' menu but i can add some sides-"

"Ew no!" I grimaced. My mum hit me under the table. "No thank you." I cleared my throat. "I'll just have the back burger then please."

"I'll have that right out for you." The waitress grinned a fake smile, eyeing me irritably. Once she walked off, Gus suddenly stood up and clinked a fork against the side of his glass cup. Sheila and I made frantic eye contact and both our hearts stopped.

"Can I have everyone's attention please?" Gus' voice boomed out through the diner, catching everyone's attention. I stared in shock. "Seven months ago I met this beautiful woman, Liz Hemmings. She's the most amazing, strongest woman on this earth and I want her by my side always. That's why..."

His voice trailed off as he sunk to one knee in front of her. "I want to marry her. LIz will you be my wife?" He opened a small decorated box with an impressive ring hidden inside.

She was speechless. I was speechless. For different reasons of course. "Yes! Oh my gosh, yes!" She shouted, wrapping her arms around Gus then slipping the ring on. The whole place exploded into applause.

I hadn't budged. I looked over at Sheila and she was gazing sadly at the table, fumbling with her napkin. The one thing I had wished this whole time was that Mum and Gus would break up before it got this far. Selfish... I know. But Sheila...

She hugged my mum and then smiled at her dad. "This is great." Sheila said with a transparent smile that didn't meet her eyes. Moments later the waitress brought our food, but I wasn't hungry. I just stared at the food, refusing to say anything.

After a long torturous american meal, we left a nice tip and headed outside. The cool air met with a jolt and the night sky sent dancing lights all around the parking lot. Gus and Mum were ahead of Sheila and I, shamelessly making out against the car like a couple of teenager. Ew.

Sheila and I sat down on a bench facing away from them. I stared at the sky, she stared at the ground. What do you say in a moment like this?

"That's it." Sheila whispered.

"What?" I quirked and eyebrow at her.

She turned to look at me, her coffee eyes dancing with emotion. "No more now. No late night visits, no dreamy stares, no 'bright ideas', no 'us'. We really will be brother and sister now. We gotta lay off." She rambled. I felt my heart plummet. "For our parents sake." She added quietly.

"For our parents sake." I repeated miserably.
