SHEILA'S POV:

"If you keep flirting with me like that, your mum is gunna hire a babysitter." I giggled as I buckled my seat belt. I let Luke drive my car since he didn't have one.

"I'm not flirting with you." He said in a defensive tone, but his face was bright red. I just shook my head and rolled my eyes. "So where am I going?" Luke asked.

"The animal shelter." I answered.

"No shit Sherlock." He grinned. "How do I get there?"

With a soft laugh I clicked on the GPS. We rode in silence. Not an awkward silence...it was almost pleasant. I glanced over at him.

His cobalt blue eyes were trained on the road, his structured jaw chiseling. He was working something out in his head. I frowned slightly, noticing he didn't look very happy.

"What's up?" He laughed, turning to look at me. "I was going to let you stare for a sec but then it got kind of creepy." He joked. His smile didn't reach his eyes.

"Sorry." I muttered.

"Now who's flirting with who?" Luke winked. I felt my face warm.

"Why would I flirt with you?" I laughed. In fifteen minutes we were already to the shelter. "Come on." I motioned for him to follow me through the back door. The moment Luke closed the door, the dogs began their obnoxious barking.

"They're loud!" Luke shouted. I rolled my eyes. Thanks Mr. obvious.

"This is kennel 1, these dogs are up for adoption." I said leading him through another corridor full of dogs. "This is kennel 2."

Luke walked up to one of the kennels harboring a massive Doberman. It leapt at him, only restrained by the chicken wire. He flinched back, crashing into another cage. "I'm guess these aren't adoptable." He chuckled, scrambling away from that cage as well.

"You'd guess right. These dogs are either shy from abuse or aggressive from abuse." I told him.

"None of them seem shy." He said, gazing warily at the snarling beasts. I grabbed his hand in mine and drug him to the back of the kennel. I tried not to notice his hand tighten around mine.

"Here. This is Sasha." I smiled, stopping in front of a cage that had a big beautiful black Siberian husky cowering in the corner. "She was abused by men so she's not very fond of them." I added. Luke let go of my hand and kneeled in front of the kennel.

"Hey beautiful." he murmured, sticking his hand into the cage. Sasha started growling and lowering her head at him. "hush." He whispered, sticking his whole arm into the cage. I was about to warn him that he would lose an arm when Sasha suddenly rose and crept toward him.

"That's better.." Luke murmured, holding his hand open to cup her chin as she rested her head in his hand. Man and beast. Wow. The sun shone through his dirty blonde hair and I couldn't believe how handsome he looked with his hand resting on Sasha.

LUKE'S POV:

"Can we walk her?" I asked, hand still resting on Sasha's head.

"Uhm. I don't think that's a good idea." Sheila replied. "small steps." She added with a helpless shrug. I felt a pang of disappointment.

"Oh, alright then. Can we walk a different one then?"

"Yeah, let's go check out kennel 1." She didn't grab my hand this time to drag me around. Instead she just lead the way. We decided on walking a lab named Louis. Louis the lab. I laughed to myself at his name.

He was a quirky little guy. About 9 years old and full of attitude. Sheila warned me that he was hard to walk but I ignored her. Once I opened the kennel door, I wish I'd listened to her. Benny ran forward, dragging me behind him. I had the leash wrapped around my hand so tight it was turning red.

He darted forward, wrapping the leash around my legs and flinging me onto Sheila who was just trying to help. I crashed into her and she squealed in laughter. "I told you so." She joked, helping me untangle the leash from my legs.

Louis looked at me with a knowing look and I decided he thought he was being a good wing man. "Good boy." I whispered, patting him on the head lovingly.
