LUKE'S POV:

I awoke to the sound of monotonous beeping. Slowly i peeked my eyes open. A small slit of vision became a full field as I blinked into awareness. My head swooshed as i sat up. At first I thought I was in a hospital bed, but i soon realized i was just on a couch in a hospital room.

It was dark and I could tell by the silence of the hospital it was sometime right around midnight.

I swung my legs over the edge of the couch and stretched, trying to remember the events leading up to this moment.

"Beep.... beep.... beep..." The heart monitor caught my attention. I stared at it as it flowed with zig zagged lines.

Then my memory rushed back in a serious ball-kick way. Sheila. My heart pounded painfully as my gaze rested on her. She looked so happy and peaceful laying in the hospital bed. I rose slowly and walked towards the edge of her bed.

Someone had braided her hair, i reached out and stroked it. I ran my fingers down her arm until my hand was in hers. I knelt beside her and kissed her swollen cheek. "Sleep my princess, in the morning I'll be here." I whispered.

I returned to the couch and tried to sleep, but knowing that Sheila was hurt and broken was enough to keep me from resting.

I'd only dozed off for a minute (or so i thought) when the blinding morning light and the sound of voices woke me up. I sat up quickly, surveying the situation as quickly as possible.

People were about to come in the room, I heard my mum's voice, Eve's voice, Jack's voice, and two other voices I didn't recognize. The door swung open and everyone looked at me as they came in.

There was a plethora of pity and sorrow behind Eve's eyes as she stared at me. "We put you in here... we thought you might like waking up and knowing she was safe." She murmured kindly. I nodded and gazed at the two strangers.

One was obviously a doctor and the other a police officer. I clenched my jaw and rose to feet. "Did you find him?" I asked, eyeing the cop.

"My name is Officer-"

"Did you find him?" I repeating, interrupting him sternly.

"Luke." Mum frowned. "Don't be rude, he's doing all he can." She added, looking flustered and like she'd either spent the whole night awake or crying.

"He was only a mile away from here at a gas station around 1 this morning but he might be long gone since then." Officer who-gives-a-fuck informed me.

"So you don't know where he is?" I demanded.

"Not at the moment." He grunted. "Uhm excuse me." He said as he slipped out of the room. Frustration riddled through my veins as I ran my hands through my hair.

"You better have good news." I growled at the doctor as I dropped onto the couch, elbows rested on my knees.

"She's alive." He snapped. I looked up at him quickly. "Is that good enough news for you?" he propped an eyebrow, his body language full of attitude.

"That depends." I began in a snarky voice. "Is she going to be a vegetable for the rest of her life?"

Eve paled at my forwardness. She covered her mouth with her hand and look mortified.

I clearly caught the doctor off guard as he broke away from my icy glare. He cleared his throat and regained his composure. "No..." He said slowly. "She shouldn't be." He added quickly.

"For the love of God." I groaned, rolling my eyes and turning away. "Can't anyone do their jobs?" I snarled under my breath.

"Luke you having a bad attitude isn't going to help this situation." Mum quipped.

"Yeah well me having a good one isn't going to change anything either, is it?" I retorted venomously.

"All we know right now is that she suffered severe trauma to her head and neck and she's in a coma.."

"Induced or otherwise?" I interrupted.

"Otherwise." He frowned. "We didn't put her in this coma, her body did. There's no telling when she'll come out of it." He explained.

"Damn..." I breathed slowly, glancing up at her still body. At least her hearts beating again. I thought silently. I felt my eyes welling up with tears and had to bury my face in my sleeve. No one could see me so exposed.

"Luke we have to take you home." Jack informed me. "I'm fucking pissed that this is happening to you.. and to Sheila. But we have to go home."

I shook my head slowly, too broken to speak.

"Yes Luke. Say bye, we'll visit her tomorrow." He demanded. I shook my head slowly again, tasting salt in my mouth from the tears rolling down my cheeks. I felt like a kid who just got his candy stolen.

I was so weak and fragile... every little crack in my heart was over flowing with sadness. I couldn't handle this anymore. My shoulders started to shake with each sob and by now everyone knew I was crying.

"Leave..." I said through my sobs. "Please." I begged. "Just for a minute."

"We'll give you a minute." Jack agreed, ushering everyone out of the room leaving Sheila and I alone again. I rose slowly, feeling like vomiting. I ran into the edge of the bed and fell over, arms draped over her bruised skin.

"Sheila.." I cried, clutching the sheets. "Sheila.. please..." I whimpered, vision foggy through the tears. "Just come back from where you've gone.."

When I got up, the world felt wrong and fake. I opened the door numbly and closed it quietly. My family gazed at me with sadness in their eyes, I knew what I looked like. My eyes were red and glossy... my cheeks red and wet from tears... my mouth had a frown cemented onto it.. I looked like hell and didn't even care.

"Let's go." I croaked and they lead the way out. Jack fell into step next to me.

"Gus will pay for this." He promised in a low growl. I nodded stiffly. Everything inside of me was breaking apart and telling me i should stay here. Watch over her. Be with her for when she wakes.

I stopped walking mid step.

"Luke." Jack coaxed. "Come on. One foot in front of the other."

I shook my head sadly. "What if he comes here?" I asked softly.

Jack looked around to make sure no one was listening then he muttered, "then we kill him."
