LUKE'S POV:
I blinked at her in shock.
"Why?" She asked.
"Uhm uhm... uhhh I don't know." I answered. She just shook her head sadly and laid it back down on me. I wanted to tell her... but if I was wrong... she'd hate me. "So funny story, my mum gave me a curfew."
"My dad gave me one too, I gotta be back by 11." She sighed.
"Me too." I chuckled. "I have to go." I whispered softly. She gave me big sad eyes but nodded understandingly. I helped her to her feet and gazed into her mocha colored eyes. "I'll miss you." I said with a slow smile.
"I'll miss you too." She frowned, hugging me tightly. I went to pull away and she suddenly grabbed my shoulders and kissed me roughly. After a moment, she pulled away and breathlessly whispered, "Luke Hemmings, no matter what happens. No matter where we are, I love you. And I always will."
Startled by her confession, I just gazed lovingly at her. "You're the most amazing girl I've ever met Sheila, how could I not love you too?" We both grinned stupidly and kissed lightly. "I'll see you again." I promised, stroking her cheek with my thumb.
"Hopefully sooner than later." She answered. Then it was time to go. We walked to the bus station together and I waited for her to get on her bus and leave before I got on mine headed in the opposite direction.
I thought about her words. I could still hear her saying I love you. But it was over shadowed by the sound of her voice saying Eve. There was no possible way that this Eve was Sheila's mum. It just wasn't possible. I guess stranger things have happened.
Then my phone started ringing. CALL FROM UNKNOWN.
Sheila! I smiled, but when I answered, it was Eve. "Luke?" She answered hastily.
"Eve! You told me not to contact you." I said.
"Yeah I know, but I had to ask... how do you know Sheila?" She asked.
"My mum is married to Gus." I replied quickly.
"Oh.. Luke I-"
Then everything went quiet. Shit my phone had died.
I slipped through the door way at 11:01pm, feeling like a rebel for that one minute I was late. I walked into the kitchen, realizing I hadn't eaten anything all day. I made a pizza pocket and as soon as I turned the microwave on I heard a strange noise coming from the living room.
I looked around cautiously and didn't see anybody. Then I recognized the sound of crying and knew it was my mum. I walked over and found her lying on the floor sobbing hard. My heart twisted in a painful way and even though I was still pissed at her.
I sat across from her on the carpet, our shoes brushing each other lightly. I crossed my arms, resting my elbows on my knees. "Mum." I mumbled softly, reaching a hand out and stroking her arm softly.
"Luke." She lifted her head up slightly but then covered her head again. I moved closer to her, wrapping my arms around her warmly. I kissed her head lightly.
"What's wrong?" I asked softly.
"Everything Luke!" She shouted, her eyes red and watering. "You're right... I ruined your life. You just wanted to come home and see your mum and live your life... and I threw this all on you and asked you to be okay with it." She cried again.
"No, no shh..." I rubbed her back. "You just wanted to be happy." I answered, feeling like crap now.
"You were with Sheila weren't you?" She suddenly asked softly.
"No I wasn't." I lied, not taking any chances. She just nodded slowly, seeming too consumer in her heart ache to challenge me about it.
"You need to go to bed." She said, wiping her nose on her sleeve.
"Are you going to be okay?" I asked kindly.
"Yeah, I'm going to go stay the night with Gus." She answered.
I nodded and handed her a tissue. I kissed her on the head lightly before going up to my room. I collapsed onto my bed, overwhelmed with emotion.
I wasn't used to my mum crying. I wasn't used to a girl telling me she loved me. I wasn't used to be a detective and I sure as hell wasn't used to getting up at 7am. I sighed heavily, my eyelids suddenly feeling too heavy.
It thought it had only been about twenty minutes before I heard a knocking on my window but with a glance at the clock, it had been two and a half hours. The clock read 2:43am in a bright red light.
"What the hell.." I sat up slowly, checking my phone. It was finally charged and I had a message. I clicked it open.
MESSAGE FROM UNKNOWNEVE: Luke, get your mother away from Gus. He's dangerous.
I was too tired to comprehend. Then I heard knocking on the window again. I ran to the window and opened it. Sheila slumped into my room, falling to the floor.
"What are you doing here?" I smiled sleepily. When she sat up and faced me, my smile disappeared. In the pale moonlight I could make out a dark purple circle around her eye, a cut eyebrow and a split lip.
"He knew I was with you Luke." She whispered, then she passed out.
