LUKE'S POV:
My eyes flickered open. I was staring at the blank ceiling and my heart was already hurting. I sat up slowly, letting reality sink in. Did last night... yeah it definitely happened. I thought wistfully, rubbing my face with my hands. With a defeated sigh, I threw off my blanket and crossed my room. I grabbed my door knob but was unable to turn it. Something just felt so wrong. The house was so quiet.
I rested my forehead against the door.
"Sheila." I whispered, shutting my eyes. "I need your love to light up this house."
I smirked, recognizing the lyrics to "Never Be". I guess our lyrics really were burned into our brains. I finally pushed the door open and peaked into Sheila's old room. It was as empty as my heart.
I walked into her closet and only saw hangers. I stared at her bed and only saw mattress. It's like she was never even here. I thought sadly. I lowered myself into her bed and could still barely smell that minty smell she had. I savored it. This was the last thing I had of her.
With a burdened heart and a broken spirit, I wandered downstairs. Mum was fast asleep in her bed, a permanent frown glued to her face. I honest to goodness felt like shit about what I'd said the night before. I was just stressed...
I knew that was no excuse though. I dug through the fridge and there was literally nothing but half a gallon of milk.
"Looking for something?" Jack asked, walking in behind me. He was wearing a well fitting white t-shirt tucked into plaid pajama pants. I think those were my pants...
"Yeah, food." I answered, closing the fridge door. "I'm surprised you're still here."
He shrugged casually. "Who's gunna protect mum next time you decide to lash out on her?"
The stung. "That's not fair." I muttered, unable to meet his steely gaze. He was right, I was out of line.
"It's actually way too fair." Jack retorted, snagging his keys off of the counter. "Come on, we need to talk." He said, leaving the house in his PJ's. I was in my PJ's too now that I thought about it.
I followed him anyways. Even though he could be an ass, something about Jack was always intriguing. "Got any preferences?" He said as soon as I buckled my seatbelt.
"Preferences?" My eyebrows knitted together.
"Yeah, for breakfast food." He answered, pulling away from the house.
"No." I answered quickly, but then thought about that diner I was at yesterday with the mysterious waitress. "Actually yeah, take a left at the light."
We were seated quickly and I was instantly scanning for her. I needed to see the familiar stranger. The young waitresses were milling around busily, carrying food to and from tables. One of them dropped glass and all eyes went to her. She apologized quickly.
Another waitress had long brunette hair, but that wasn't her. Maybe...
"Luke are you even listening to me?" Jack sighed irritable from the other side of the table.
"Uhm no sorry. What were you saying?" I asked. He glared at me but decided to repeat himself.
"I was just saying that I think you need to lay off mum. You were really cruel." He sighed, stirring his water mindlessly with his straw. I just stared blankly at the menu, refusing to feel guilty.
"But you know... I understand you Lukey." Jack suddenly said. I shot him a confused look. No one 'understood' me. "I've never seen you that mean before. That's how I know you really care about Sheila."
Him saying her name put daggers in my heart. "Yeah. She's amazing." I muttered numbly. There was a quietness between us. I could see him staring at me out of the corner of my eye.
"What?" I snapped and he looked away quickly.
"Nothing." He shrugged unconvincingly. I cocked my head sideways at him and then with a sudden realization practically yelled.
"You know where she is don't you!?" I rose halfway out of my seat.
"Keep it down!" He barked and I sat back down.
"Where is she?" I asked softly, hand clutching my glass so hard I was close to shattering it.
"She's in down town." He answered. Before I could ask for more details, he scribbled an address on a napkin. Right then I saw her... the waitress from before... leaving the diner in a hurry. I snatched up the napkin.
"Jack you are the best brother ever. I love you!" I yelled, quickly scooting out of the booth.
"Luke where are you go-"
"Bye!" I yelled.
"You owe me!"
