Maine spent the next couple days making it up to her friends. But doing that was a lot harder than she thought it would be because both Hannah and Jake are busy doing something else.
She tried to call them but they never picked up or called her back. It's like they shut her out of their lives. This is exactly what she's afraid. She's starting to lose the most important people in her life and she can't even explain to them what's going and why it's going on.
--
Alden returned home later that day and noticed his parents drinking coffee in the kitchen. Thinking that talking to them about what happened last night would be useless, the young guy just shrugged and ran up to his room.
A few minutes later , one of their maids knocked on his door. He grunted but opened it anyway.
"What do you want?" he snapped.
"Your parents asked for a copy of your schedule."
"Ugh, tell them to get it themselves." he replied before slamming the door shut on her.
---
To distract herself from all her wild thoughts, Maine decided to go shopping. She still tried to call Hannah and Jake a couple of timed but they did not answer nor called her back. Maine just sighed and turned off her phone.
One year ago , everything is still different. Life was not as complicated and not as hard as it is right now.
"Take me back to last year, please." she whispered to herself.
"Maine?" the young girl turned around, only to see one of the people she would like to avoid the most.
"Vanessa?" she asked, feeling her heart skip a couple of beats. Alden's ex on the other hand just smiled.
---
"They did that to her?" Andrew asked him through the phone.
"Yes they did."
"What did you do then?"
"We walked out."
"You do know that it's all an act right?" Andrew asked, reminding him of his plan.
"Yeah,. he replied. There was this split second that night where he got carried away and forgot about it. He thought it was for real, that Maine is really her girlfriend.
"You're just tripping out." he thought to himself.
"Can we hang today?" Alden then asked his friend.
"Can't, sorry."
"Why?"
"Jessica is coming."
"I guess you two are gonna be fucking all day long"
"Maybe .. who knows?" he replied cheeky tone and they both started laughing.
"Alden, why don't you try hang with Maine?"
"What?"
"Everyone needs to buy the idea that you two are going out, right?"
"Yeah."
"Okay. I'll see you soon." Andrew replied before ending the call abruptly.
---
"How are you?" Vanessa asked Maine.
"I'm good, you?" she asked back, trying to act as cool as possible.
"The same. I heard about the dinner by the way, how was it?"
"It was fine, kind of awkward since the first meeting but still."
"It took Alden more than a month to introduce me to his parents. You got introduced at what? six days? That's really fast. He must love you so much."
"He must .... right." Maine answered before shifting her view towards the floor. The more she talks to Vanessa, the more she's getting confused as to why Alden gave up on her.
"What do you call each other?"
"..'Babe' .. sometimes 'love'.."
"That's really sweet." Vanessa replied.
"Why did the two of you ... you know?"
"Long story ... I don't even think that still matters."
Suddenly, Maine's phone started ringing and Alden's name flashed across the screen.
"Hello?" she asked.
"Where are you?"
"I'm having coffee at the mall."
"Where to be exact?"
"Starbucks .. duh?"
"Okay I'll be there in 5 minutes."
"What? Wait ..."
Before she could even say another word, Alden already said bye and ended the call.
"Who's that?" Vanessa asked.
"Alden."
--
His mouth fell open the moment she saw Maine and Vanessa talking to each other. He took a deep breath and approached them.
"Hey babe." he greeted.
"Hey, sit down."
"Vanessa." Alden said and smiled at her.
"I would love to stay but I hate to be the third wheel" Vanessa replied before she started gathering her stuff.
"It's nice to meet you." she then said to Maine.
"Likewise." Maine answered and so Vanessa walked away.
The young guy then got up and followed her outside, leaving a very confused Maine behind.
"Vanessa!" Alden called out and so she stopped walking.
"What?"
"Is there anything wrong?" he asked.
"Everything's wrong Alden. But don't mind me, go enjoy your girlfriend."
Alden turned around and saw Maine leaving as well. He gave Vanessa one last look before he ran towards his fake girlfriend.
"Where are you going?"
"Home."
"Why? I'll drive you." he offered.
"No need. I can still pay for a cab."
"What happened between the two of you?"
"None of your business."
"I think it's pretty much my business, Maine."
"Fine, you want to know? She told me how you gave up on her. Happy?"
"She told you that?"
"No. I asked and don't you dare tell me it's not my right to." Maine replied, still walking away from him.
"Just so you know I did not give up on her."
"Doesn't matter!!" Maine yelled before exiting the mall, leaving him behind.
