Song for this chapter:

1. "Almost is Never Enough" by Ariana Grande feat. Nathan Sykes

--

Alden stood there speechless. He vividly remembered his brother's voice he found a certain girl interesting, and that he's going to ask a lot of questions if they will ever meet again. The young looked at his brother with wide eyes and then turned his view towards the equally confused Maine.

"Wait, you two know each other because? ...." Maine's voice trailed off.

"We're brothers." Alden blurted out and pulled Matthew towards him.

"Oh ... okay. Wait, what the.... I thought you're the only son?" Hannah asked.

"Nope, I'm not. Matthew grew up in Ireland, hence the accent." Alden replied, not removing his eyes on Maine. He was going to say something, but then Jake already excused himself.

"The movie is about to start, let's get going." he told the two and walked away. Maine gave him and Matthew one last look before she followed Hannah and Jake.

"Well, that was weird." Matthew commented.

"I'll explain everything later."

---

It all made sense to Maine now. Matthew's vibe clearly reminded her of Alden. She breathed out a sigh after the three of them entered the theater itself. Jake sat in between her and Hannah right before the movie started playing.

"Are you alright?" Jake whispered.

"Yeah." she answered right away.

"You do know you can tell me anything, right?" he asked her and she quickly said yes. Maine then just smiled and tried her best to focus on the movie. But that simple task became really hard because thoughts of Alden wouldn't leave her mind. She tried to brush them off but they held on tightly. After an hour, she finally gave up and just decided to give Alden a call later.

Two hours later, the movie ended and everyone marched towards the exit. Maine brought her phone up to check the time.

"Do you girls want a milkshake? My treat." Jake told them.

"Uh, I have to go home or else my Dad will go mad again. You two lovebirds have a great time, bye!" Maine replied and started walking away from them. She quickly got into a cab and was driven home in an instant.

---

Vanessa took a deep breath and entered the Faulkerson's mansion. She will not give up on Alden easily. The young girl is beyond ready to make sure that she's going to get him back.

"What bad air brought you here?" Mrs. Faulkerson asked the moment their eyes met.

"You." Vanessa replied promptly.

"Ugh, what do you want?"

"I have a proposition, one that you can't resist."

"Fine, I'm listening. What is it?"

--

"Maine, are you alright?" she turned around and saw a very concerned Allison looking at her. The young girl smiled and slowly nodded. Her cousin smiled back and stepped onto the balcony as well.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure." Allison replied.

"Have you ever told a guy you love him?"

"Nope, at least not yet. Why?" Allison asked back and looked at her.

"Uh .... I have this friend of mine that I really like. He's sweet, kind and very lovable. But the thing is, he still can't get rid of his emotional baggage. And I think that's the hindrance between us. I'm sure he likes me too, it's just don't think he's ready for me yet."

"So you're gonna admit your feelings to him in hopes of making him come to his senses?" Allison asked her.

"Exactly."

"What's the name?"

"Alden .... Alden Richards."

---

"Now is the perfect time to explain everything." Alden heard Matthew whisper after they got home. He let out a sigh and asked his brother to follow him. The two decided to settle on the kitchen.

Alden pulled out two bottles of beer and opened them right away. He gave one to Matthew and sat on the seat opposite to him.

"Maine and I ... we sort of have a deal."

"A what? A deal? What kind of deal?" Matthew asked with nothing but the tone of interest in his voice.

"I hired her as my girlfriend to make Vanessa jealous." he muttered and Matthew gasped as though he's telling the greatest story of all time.

"Vanessa? Your snotty ex-girlfriend?" Matthew asked and Alden nodded.

"So yeah ... I asked Maine to be my girlfriend in exchange for money. She's a decent girl so don't judge her. She did it to provide for her family after her Dad lost his job. Just to make it clear, we never had sex. Nothing happened between us." he uttered and took a sip of the beer straight from the bottle.

"Oh, okay. So why the hell are you two awkward around each other?"

"Because we fell for each other." he said weakly. Alden spent the past couple of days thinking of how he can fix his complicated life. Maine already ruled his heart but his brain still could not fully let go of Vanessa. A part of her memory still lingered inside his mind and if he can't get that out, she will stay there for a very long time.

"Then court her, Dude. Don't let your feelings go to waste."

"I'm afraid our situation is a little too complicated for that." he said and breathed out a disappointed sigh.

"I will help you." Matthew suddenly said.

"What?" Alden asked with wide eyes.

"I'm going to help you court Maine and make her your real girlfriend."

He smiled and shook his head from side to side, trying to tell Matthew that it is almost impossible to make that happen. But the young Faulkerson wasn't fazed, Matthew then spent the next couple of minutes giving tips on how to make a girl fall in love.

--

"So, they've been faking it the whole time then huh? Interesting." Vanessa whispered. She stood behind the kitchen's side wall and listened to every word that came out of Alden's mouth.

She grinned widely and started walking away. Vanessa already formed a plan, and that was to expose Alden and Maine's fake relationship in front of the entire University.
