"Are you sure?" his friend asked through a Skype video-call conversation.
"Yes." Alden replied in an excited tone. He then smiled at Andrew, his life long best friend and the reason why he met Vanessa.
"How?"
"Under that Oak Tree." he answered, hoping Andrew would remember how important that place is.
"No way. That smells like destiny to me." Andrew said, teasing him.
"Shut up." Alden replied and so he started laughing.
"You do know I'd marry Vanessa anytime if I could alright?" Alden asked, still clinging on to the hope he and his former flame can get back together and make things right.
"Copy." Andrew answered and then just smiled. He didn't say a word for a few minutes for he knows Alden would get all defensive about it. Vanessa Thompson and Andrew Thompson are siblings, he is the reason why Alden can't get her out off his head.
"So what are your plans now?' Andrew asked, shifting the topic. \
"Of course I'm gonna keep her around."
"Is she hot?"
Alden got into thinking and was able to come up with two words that he knows will describe her perfectly. "Unconventionally beautiful." the type of beauty that rarely comes around. But when it does, it will leave every heart on the floor.
"She's fine." the you.ng guy replied, not wanting to elaborate any longer.
"That's good I guess"
"How's Vanessa?" the young guy then asked, suddenly the mood of the conversation changed. "How is she? .. she's alright." Andrew answered in a quite uncomfortable tone.
"Are you sure?" Alden asked.
"Dude , do you think I'm lying?"
"Sorry, no."
A few minutes after, their Skype session had ended and so Alden went to bed for an early goodnight sleep.

The next day, Maine went to the campus much earlier than usual. She is happy that finally, just when she thought all hope is lost, the boy she's been looking for came home. The young girl is still amazed that after all these years, they were still able to find their way back to each other. But she also sensed something else, there's this certain sadness inside of him that just lingers there. He smiles a lot but she can feel something bitter in it. And it made her sad as well.
"Maine!" the young girl quickly turned around and saw Jake and Hannah running towards her.
"You look pretty today." Jake commented, shifting his glasses a bit to get a much better view.
"Thank you." she replied, smiling awkwardly at him.
"Well you look extra happy today." Hannah uttered right before they started walking again.
"I am." Maine answered with an undeniable smile on her face.
"What's the reason for it?"
"Hannah, I found the boy."
"What boy?" Jake suddenly asked with a slight tone of jealousy in his voice. "The boy I used to play with under the Oak tree in the park." Maine replied.
"The one who will complete your fairy tale? where? where is he?" Hannah asked frantically, looking around as quickly as possible.
"It turns out , he's in our class." Maine answered, keeping the guessing game on.
"What .. he's been there all along?" Jake asked.
"Yes. But not for long though, he's just new."
"You mean Alden? Girl you're dreaming." Hannah said, giving Maine her trademark bitch face.
"Hey Maine!" the three turned around and saw Alden running towards them while waving his hand. "Dreaming huh?" Maine asked Hannah, much to her best friend's shock.
"Hey ..." Alden greeted with a smile that runs from his one perfect ear to the other.
"Are you real?" Hannah asked and then started pinching his cheeks. Maine had to pull her awya from him just to make her stop.
"Hannah , Jake ... this is Alden ... my childhood friend. Alden, this is Jake and Hannah." Maine uttered, introducing the three of them to each other.
Hannah and Alden did a handshake, but as soon as the young guy turned to Jake ... the mood has changed.
"I'm Jake." her friend said. His stern voice quickly increased the tension and so she decided to break the moment right away to avoid any sort of commotion between the two.
"Alright guys , I'm gonna show him around. See ya." she told her friends before grabbing Alden's arm and walking away.
"What's with your guy friend?" Alden asked Maine as soon as they gained some distance.
"Who? Jake?"
"Yeah."
"Well, he has a thing for me. But I made it clear that we can only be friends." Maine relied, trying her best not to sound insensitive.
"The way he looked at me, it's almost like he wants to kill me right there."
"He's just like that but don't worry he's harmless." Maine assured him.
"Fine, if you say so."
---
Maine went home a little late than her usual. The moment she entered their house, she already noticed something wrong. The young girl took a deep breath and walked towards the kitchen where she heard mumbled voices.
"What happened?" Maine asked.
"Your father's been laid off from his work. He's unemployed now."
The world went into slow motion the moments he heard her mother say that. Her father is the breadwinner, and if he doesn't have a job anymore then they will starve.
"Well, there's a lot of other jobs out there right?" she asked, trying to be positive.
"He can't apply just like that Maine. He's too old for most of the jobs here."
"I'm sorry" his father said and then extended out his arms, as if a way of telling his children to hug him. Maine and her siblings hugged their father as tight as they could.
"Does this mean, I'm gonna have to stop studying?" the young girl asked. That question that left her mouth is not made out of complaining or anything negative, it's her only way of helping their financial state.
"We'll try our best for that not to happen." her father replied.
---
"Hey, Man." Andrew asked through his phone.
"What?"
"I have a good news for you."
"Really? what is it?" Alden asked, curious.
"I finally convinced my parents to move to the same town where you are right now. That's right brother, you'll see her again!" Andrew said, excited and happy at the same time.
"Vanessa? Oh shiiiiiiiiit."
