Chris.
I'm riding with Tyra today
Miya's text flashed on my phone screen. Mentally replying, I shoved my phone in my pocket and made my way inside my car. The key played a little jingle as I put them in the ignition. My car roared as I turned the key.
Well...
I woke up ten minutes early, like I usually do, so that Miya would be ready by the time I drove over to her house. With this extra time, I might as well go pick up something to eat. I let the idea roam my mind while I shifted the gear to reverse and backed out of my driveway, before making my way down the street and out of my neighborhood.
I played with my chin hairs as I walked into the Burger King; Looking at the line, I kind of wanted to say forget Burger King, just go to school... But no, I was hungry and whats being five minutes late? Nothing serious. I stood in line behind these two older ladies.
"Hello, can I help you sir?" The cashier queried.
"Uh, yes. Can I get uh Rodeo chicken sandwich." I spoke while looking at the meau above her.
"A meal?"
I nodded slowly. "Large Fries and Medium Sprite."
"Would that be all?" She asked. I hummed and she nodded. "$5.38 is your price."
After I paid, I moved to the side to wait for my food.
My hands untangled my headphones as I placed them in my ears. Once I plugged them in, the idea of needing a job entered my mind.
"Oh... Are y'all hiring?" I leaned over the counter asking the lady.
"Yes actually, you're interested?" She quizzed while helping a customer. Well duh. That's why I asked.
"Yes. Should I apply online or can I get an application from here?"
"I'll see if we have one... Give me a second."
I nodded and moved along to the side. My eyes roamed my phone, looking for what song to play...
A soft tap on my shoulder snapped me back to reality. I pulled one earphone out and looked in the direction of the lady.
"Here's your food."
"Thank you... " I read her name tag quickly. "Marie." I smiled. She smiled as well and shifted away from my gaze.
"You still in high school?" She asked. One of the other workers walked over to me with papers in her hand.
"Yup. Senior year." I responded nonchalantly.
"Oh..." She sung. Marie looked back at the customer and did her regular song of asking what the person wanted.
"Here's the application." The co-worker said to me. "Oh wait I forgot, one thing I'll be back... Aren't you going to be late for school?"
I shrugged and stuck the earphone back in my ear. Not playing any music.
....
"He's trying to work here?" I heard Marie's co-work ask.
"Yeah... He's cute isn't he?" Marie murmured.
"Damn right."
"He's still in high school though, a senior." Marie uttered.
"And?" The girl laughed. "That means we're only a year apart."
"Yeah, but I don't like dating people younger than me... Welcome to Burger King, how may I help you?"
