Evan's POV (thought I'd try something new)
We were all sitting and enjoying Christmas dinner when suddenly the door slams open. I cringe, knowing exactly who is here.
Michelle comes stomping in the room and starts yelling at Ashton. I immediately pull Sky into my arms, knowing she gets scared when this happens.
Michelle continues to yell while Ashton tries to remain calm. Addi stands up, asking if it's going to be okay with tears in her eyes. That's when I get mad.
Addi rarely cries. She's strong. Ashton taught her since a young age that crying doesn't fix your problems. She taught her that if you try hard enough to find the good, you'll be happy. And she has never forgotten that.
This is ridiculous. But Ashton never loses her cool. She comforts Addi for a moment before Luke softly pulls her away. I knew I liked that boy for a a reason.
He pulls Addi into his lap and she hugs him tight, crying into his chest. He hugs her back, whispering comforting words in her ear. I see Ashton mouth a thanks to him before walking into the hallway.
There is yelling, but we all stay still, knowing Ashton wouldn't want us to start something anymore than her mother already has. Then there's a smash. Luke and I are both out of our seats faster than anyone can blink an eye.
We look at each other, silently deciding who should go. I nod my head in their direction, telling him he can go. He smiles graciously before walking off quickly to help Ashton.
Moments later they both return. Ashton has obviously been crying, but she smiles nonetheless. Trying to convince everyone everything is okay.
That's her. She's so strong. The poor girl has been raising children since 12, and she won't ever give up on them.
-
Eventually everyone is sitting back down and talking. I look over at Ashton, who is faking a smile yet again. I know there's something wrong.
She just doesn't have that light in her eyes. She's thinking about something. He mom said something that hurt her.
I make a mental note to ask later before continuing on with dinner.
-
After dinner, it's about 7:30 and the crowd begins to leave. Ashton thanks them all for coming and apologizes for her mother before they leave.
She sends the girls to the shower and Jake is up in his room somewhere. I fed Court a bit ago and she's sleeping.
All that's left is Luke, Ash, and me.
"What did she say that hurt you so much?"
"What were you thinking about at dinner?" Luke and I ask different questions at exactly the same time.
She looks between us before answering.
"She called me a whore again. I hate that. And she broke that picture of dad." She says, leaning into Luke's side.
"Her opinion doesn't matter." I say. Luke rubs his hand up and down her arm in a comforting manner.
"She was drunk. She didn't mean it. She's a good person. She really is. She just.. I don't know.. she's just not doing to well right now." She says, trying to make excuses for her.
"Quit making excuses for her! She has made your life a living hell! Do you think I haven't seen the scars on your wrists or the empty look in your eyes? She's a terrible mother! She hasn't been home in 3 days, she comes home just when you're finally having a good time and fucking ruins it! She's ridiculous! She's a drunk! It needs to stop!" I scream. That was it. I can't sit back and watch her best this girl up. She could have an life! She could go so far, but her fucking mother is holding her back! That's not fair! And she's cutting herself! Has been since I met her, but I knew it wasn't mine to bring up randomly. She had to tell me. But I just blew it. Dammit!
In the midst of my screaming, Ashton had started sobbing. Crying harder and harder every minute. She was grasped onto Luke's torso and he was holding her into him, just as tightly.
"Oh shit. I'm so sorry Ashton. I shouldn't be screaming at you. Dammit. Sorry." I say, moving closer to her side and rubbing her back.
"It's fine. It's fine." She says, loosening her grip on Luke and drying her tears a bit. Her makeup is smeared everywhere and her small body is still shaking a bit with the sobs she's trying to hold back.
I don't like looking at her like this. I've only known her for like a year, but I'd like to think I have had some impact on her life. Since her father is gone and her mother is a bitch, I like to think of myself as her parental figure. She needs one.
Luke continues to hold her, rubbing up and down her arm with one hand while his other is wrapped securely around her back. He hasn't taken his eyes off of her and you can see in them that it hurts him to see her like this as well.
Moments later, she is sitting up between us, her eyes dried and trying to smile.
"Um. Well, I'm gonna let you two be alone for a few minutes. I'm going to go check on Court." I say.
They both nod thankfully before I walk off.

Luke's POV (man, this chapter is all over the place, sorry)
"Um. Well, I'm gonna let you two be alone for a few minutes. I'm going to go check on Court." Evan says.
Ashton and I both nod greatfully before he walks off.
"Don't listen to what she says. You're not a whore and we all know it. And Evan wasn't yelling at you, he was yelling for you because what you have to deal with is totally unfair." I say, knowing she really gets upset when her mother insults her like that and when she thinks she's being yelled at.
She just curls into my side again, not trusting her voice.
I hold her a few more minutes before I realize I have to go home. As much as I wish I could be here, I need to be with my family as well. "Ash baby? I gotta leave. My mum wants me home tonight." I say.
She smiles at me and hugs me one last time. "Thanks for being here. Enjoy your family while they're all here." She says seriously. "I don't want you wasting all your time here. I don't want to be one of those couples that tear their families apart because they won't let each other see their families." She says looking into my eyes.
"That only happens when the families don't get along babe. Nothing will tear us apart. My mum loves you. And I'd like to think your family likes me at least a little." I say with a chuckle.
She smiles before walking me to the door. I give her one last kiss before starting to make my way home.
-
As soon as I walk in the door, I'm bombarded by questions from my brothers.
"Was that her mom?"
"Is her mom always like that?"
"Did she not ask to have a party or something?"
"What was that crash in the hall?"
"Why was everyone acting like that's a normal thing?"
"Wha-"
"Shut up!!" I scream, not being able to handle all the questions.
They both look at me shocked, I finally open my mouth to tell them what I could.
"Listen, yes, her mother is like that, but she doesn't want you to look at her differently because of it. Her mother threw something in the hall. It's all it was. Guys I really can't tell you much. This is her thing and she's trusted me with it. I can't just go around telling people. It's not my place." I say calmly.
They both nod, looking at me apologetically.
"She's great Luke. She's smart, she can cook, she's obviously gonna make a good mother, she's strong, to deal with that all the time I mean, and not to mention she's hot!" Jack says, ruining everything with the last little bit.
I chuckle and shake my head a bit before we all walk off to the living room where my mother is sitting.
