Haru's POV

I never felt so relaxed. Everything was so soft. I opened my eyes and I looked around. I was in a plain room in this giant... Thing. What was it called again? Oh right, Rin called it a bed. My arm shifted and I bumped into something. I looked down from the fluffy white mound called a pillow.

Rin was kneeling at my bed, head in her arms, sleeping. Did she watch over me until unconsciousness took over?

I smiled softly, wow Rin. You really are a softie.

Hesitantly, I let a hand reach over and gently ruffle her hair before I drifted off again.

Umi's POV

I watched his back as I sat on a high branch.

"And just what are you doing up there, Umi?"

I leapt down, "I was waiting for you to notice my chakra signature."

Itachi stared coldly at me, "What do you want with me, Takeshita?"

My expression changed serious. "Do you know of the Takeshita's kekkai genkai, Itachi-san?" I walked closer, "I read quite a bit of your mind's emotions...Itachi... And I began to wonder, are you really fine with hurting your brother? Are you really fine with never seeing your parents again?"

Itachi stiffened, "And what good will my answers do for you? Are you trying to seek my weakness?"

"Just a more believable truth," I said quietly, "I'm not your enemy, Itachi-san. I don't completely know how you feel, however, I have seen joy in your mind. And love... Wouldn't you just do anything for Sasuke-kun?" I put a hand on my chest, "I mean, why do you think I joined Orochimaru in the beginning?"

Itachi remained as a stone.

"It is not wise to not trust anyone. Aren't you tired of shunning yourself? Do you enjoy solitude like this?" Umi ran a hand through her hair, "I should probably stop pestering you... But I just want to say we're on the same boat, even if we might be standing on opposite ends..."

Itachi's eyes traveled across my face and slowly, his lips stretched and curved upwards. His eyes turned kind. "Is that so?"

Finally. I wonder... Could Itachi-san have smiled this way when he was still happy?

I smiled, "It is never too late. You can always go back for Sasuke."

Itachi shook his head, "He already hates me. That was my plan. There is no turning back."

"It's unhealthy to hate someone," I chided, "you shouldn't have done that."

"He will grow strong through his goal to kill me. When he does, he'll be a hero to the Leaf. Then he can finally have a satisfying life."

Umi sighed, "As I said before.... I appreciate how noble you are with the self-sacrifice... But I really dislike your methods. Hate is a weak foundation. Sasuke needs someone to lean on."

"He has-" Itachi stopped short and his eyes went to the side, and then back to the center.

"He has who?" I pressed on, but deep inside I already knew who he was talking about. If I could force him to admit it.... Maybe Itachi would wake up. Let him register what he had done, and then I would be completely confirmed that he had a thread of hope.
