Will You Be There

After another argument at the dinner table with my parents, I locked myself in my room. The only person to keep me company was Rei. She was playing in her play pin which was actually a gift from my Aunt and Uncle.

Lying on the carpet floor was my brothers criminal record. It had all of his information on there. Including where he currently resides.

My brother is a military drop out. He went over seas for about 3years but came back because... Well, I don't know exactly. He never told me. Our parents still think he's stationed in Afghanistan. He was scared to tell my parents because he didn't want them to judge him.

I've only talked to my brother twice since he came back. Both times were over the phone. When I asked him what he was planning to do for work he would change the subject.

I read through his paper work and saw that he's been arrested for multiple counts of grand theft auto, possession of guns without a permit, and illegal bare knuckle boxing fights.

Sighing, I stuffed the folder into my luggage that was filled with clothes. I'm worried about him. I really am. We've always been so close but things have changed. I never even told him about Rei.

I heard knocking at my door and put my luggage in the closet. I opened the door to see my dad leaning against the door frame. "Lights out. And we have church tomorrow so make sure that thing." He pointed to Rei, "Doesn't make a scene again."

"OK." I said, shutting my door softly. A couple hours passed and all of my belongings were packed. The clock on my dresser read 12:35am in green numbers.

Quietly, I tip toed down the stairs and filled Rei's baby bag with snacks for the both of us and her bottles.

From the half closed curtains, a bright light shined through. I knew it was Carmella and her boyfriend Cass.

I picked up Rei from her crib. She was still sleeping tight in my arms. Gently closing the front door, I went into the backseat and set Rei in the car seat.

"Thanks so much for helping me you guys."

"Don't worry about it." Cass said, backing out of the driveway. "Carmella said we're driving to Stockton to your aunt and uncles place, right?"

I cocked my head at Carmella. "If I told Cass where we we're really going he wouldn't have wanted to take you."

"What? Then where are we going?" He asked. Me and Carmella mumbled the location. Cass could make out what we said. "No. No way I'm driving there. Not gonna happen." He shook his head.

"C'mon. Bayley needs us to drive her there."

"You know what kind of shit goes down in Charming, California?" He rhetorically asked.

"My brother lives there and I need to go."

Cass ran his hand through his hair, "Fine. So what are you going to do once your parents find out you're missing?"

"They'll think I ran away to my aunts house. She only knows I'm going to Charming because I said I have a close friend that lives there. I doubt my parents would try and get me back if it meant bringing Rei with me."

"I hope things go well for you." Carmella told me. I smiled halfly. I didn't want it to show that I was scared. I didn't even know if Kip would let me stay with him. But it was a risk I'd have to take. How bad can it be?

Finally we crossed into Charming. About 10 minutes into the town we saw 4 guys speeding down the road on motorcycles. They were on both sides of the car.

Cass gripped the steering wheel. "I told y'all crazy shit goes down in this place." He said under his breath. "Whatever you do, do not stare at them"

I couldn't help but look. All I saw were their backs. The 4 men we're wearing a black leather cut off that had a a print of a reaper. On the bottom, in a white border with black lettering, read the word 'California'. At the top, above the reaper read 'Son's Of Anarchy'.

"Son's of Anarchy?" Carmella tilted her head. "What's that?"

"Isn't it obvious?" Cass said, "They're a fierce motorcycle gang." He breathed heavily, "Are you sure you still want to stay here? I don't mind turning around and drive you to Stockton."

"No." I said. "I'll be fine." I pulled out my brothers file. I guess the copy machine Carmella used was running out of ink because some of the words didn't fully print. But I was able to make out Kip's current address. "We're almost there." I warned, biting my nails nervously.

After a few minutes we pulled up to an apartment complex. "We're here." Carmella said with a sad voice.

"You guys are amazing." I told them. They helped get my stuff out of the trunk.

"Want us to wait if he doesn't answer?" Cass asked, taking the car seat out and handing it to me.

"No thanks. I'm sure he'll show up."

We said our last goodbyes before they drove back home. I checked my cell and it was 3am. I breathed in deeply and finally gained the courage to knock on the door.
