Don't Judge Me

Once again I pulled an all nighter trying to study for my final exams. I took a hot shower and stared at myself in the foggy mirror.

I had dark circles under my eyes and my hair was all over the place. My eyes burned and welded up with warm tears that streamed down my face.

I wiped the tears away with my white towel and stepped back into the bedroom.

On the opposite side of the room, up against the wall was a wooden crib. It wasn't anything fancy. It was a hand me down from my Aunt Scarlett. She gave it to me because my parents didn't want me to keep my baby and tried pressuring me to get an abortion, so they refused to help me take care of her.

Aunt Scarlett had kept the crib in her garage after she had a miscarriage. She and my Uncle Daryl never tried for another baby after that.

I looked down into the crib and saw my beautiful daughter with her eyes closed and still dreaming. "At least one of us was able to sleep."

I went downstairs to make myself a smoothie for breakfast. I stared at the floor when I spotted my parents in the kitchen.

I could almost feel their scowl seeping through my clothes. They hated me. I know they did. They hated the fact that I got knocked up. They hated how their snobby rich friends gave them dirty looks now. They hated that because of me that we weren't seen as a perfect family anymore.

That's all they cared about. Being perfect in the eyes of others. All my parents are- are wannabes. We aren't even rich like their friends. We're just a lower middle class family. My dad's a mechanic and my moms a stay at home mom.

They're both so pathetic and lie about how and where we live. I'm not sad for me. I'm sad for them.

"That baby of yours was crying all night." My mom grouch at me, taking the curlers out of her mocha colored hair.

Ugh she's so fake. "Sorry. At least you weren't the one that had to settle her down."

"It's not our job." My dad said, flipping through the newspaper. "You wouldn't have to be dealing with this extra stress if you just went through with what your mother and I had planned."

"Killing my baby? That's your granddaughter you're talking about. Does that mean nothing to you?!" I yelled out of hurt.

My head started to hurt when I heard Rei start crying. "See what you did. It takes forever for that baby to shut up." My mom spat.

I rolled my eyes at her exaggeration. "It only takes about 10 minutes for her to calm down. Maybe its your negativity that she feels that makes her cry almost every hour." I shot back.

My father got up and slapped me. It hurt but not that bad. I was kind of used to it. "You have 5minutes to quiet your baby down or I'm leaving without you and you can walk to school." My dad threatened me.

Without saying anything I took my smoothie and the bottle of formula upstairs to my room.

I picked Rei up and started feeding her. "One day we'll get out of here okay. And that's a promise." After I burped her and finished my smoothie, I went back to the kitchen to see my dad about to leave.

"It's about time." He shook his head and started the car.

I handed Rei to my mom to take care of her while I was at school. Its not like she could say no considering she just stayed home all day. "Just call me if you have any problems with her."

"K." My mom answered with no sympathy in her voice.

I gave Rei one last kiss on the cheek before my dad drove me to school.

Ahhh, school. To be honest, I liked school. I wasn't the smartest but I knew enough to get by. The people here were nice. Everybody knew that I had a baby and that I was struggling to provide for her on my owm. My job at the mall was only making me so much money.

Some of my classmates would bring me diapers and formula to help me out. Even some of the jock guys gave me little baby outfits for Rei. Sometimes I didn't want to accept their offerings because I felt like a charity but they insisted and really cared about me.

It was nice that someone did. Well there was the father of my baby but that's a topic for another time.

I walked into the school and pulled out my Spanish book. When I closed my locker I saw my best friend, Carmella standing there with a beige folder in her hand.

She held it out in front of her. "I was snooping around at the police station and found what you needed." Carmella gave me the folder that was filled with a dozen papers.

"Won't your dad realize its missing?" I asked.

She shook her head, "No. You think I'm an idiot? This isn't the exact file, I made copies of it."

"Smart." I hugged her tightly. "Thank you so much for doing this."

"You really think this is a good idea?" she asked with a concerned expression.

"I don't know. But what choice do I have?"

"Even when you leave I'll still find a way to help you with Rei." I was about to tell her she doesn't need to do that but she stopped me before I could speak. "Do not say I don't need to do that. I'm your best friend and a lot of kids at this school love you. Just let us help." Carmella smiled as her big brown eyes became watery.

I smiled back at her and looked at the folder. What I was holding was a criminal file. Up in the right corner, written in a fine black sharpie was the name, Kip Epps. AKA my big brother.
