Chapter 21

[Gabby's POV]

AFTER class ay dumiretso ako sa mausoleum ng pamilya San Agustin.  I've been a constant visitor here for the last six months since Jelly's body was put to rest.

Madalas akong dumalaw dito hindi lang para alalahin si Jelly.  More than that, I always find myself in this place because it constantly reminds me why I made the biggest sacrifice in the first place... why I chose to let go of the woman I love the most.  Remembering Jelly's last days, how happy she was of knowing that I stayed by her side all throughout her ordeal, it somehow makes the sacrifice worth it.  Dito rin ako tumatakbo kapag pakiramdam ko ay hindi ko na kaya ang sitwasyon namin ni Mika.

When Issa told me before that Jelly wants me back, akala ko it's just a selfish whim on her part. Nagworry pa ako nu'n na baka if I see her, I'll fall for her all over again.  That time, I was already in love with Mika.

Pero hindi nangyari ang kinatatakutan ko.  Nang magkaharap kami ni Jelly, all the more I realized how much I love Mika.  My heart no longer beats for Jelly like it used to be.  And I told Jelly that.  Akala ko okay na.  Then Jelly's dad talked to me...

Kakauwi ko lang sa dorm noon.  It was quite late already kasi hinatid ko pa si Mika pauwi sa dorm nila. My phone rang when I was getting off my car.

"Good evening po, Tito Mario," bati ko sa dad ni Jelly bagamat nagtataka ako kung bakit siya napatawag at this hour.  Must be something really important, naisip ko.  Close ako sa family ni Jelly but his dad rarely calls me.

"Gabby, hijo, can you see me here at my office?  There's something I need to speak to you about," seryosong sabi niya.  I can sense that it's not going to be a good news.

Agad akong pumayag.  I drove to his office immediately.

"Tito?  What is this about?" tanong ko agad sa kaniya.  Lumapit ako at naupo sa visitor's chair sa harap ng desk niya. 

Nag-angat siya ng mukha mula sa pagkakasubsob sa mga palad niya at tiningnan ako.

"Hijo, thanks for coming on such short notice.  Hindi na ako magpapaligoy-ligoy pa.  I need to ask a big favor from you," seryosong sabi niya.  Ramdam ko na may mabigat siyang dinadala.

"Ahh ehh, kung kaya ko naman po eh wala pong problem," sagot ko.

"Your mom told me na may girlfriend ka na daw.  Is that true?"

Nagulat naman ako sa tanong niya.  Ang awkward naman.  Dad ng ex-girlfriend mo, nagtatanong sa 'yo about your new girlfriend!

"Ahhmm, yes Tito.  Her name is Mika.  Pero medyo bago pa lang po kami dahil recently niya pa lang po ako sinagot," nahihiyang sabi ko.

"Bago pa lang pala kayo. That's a relief," parang wala sa loob na sabi ni Tito Mario.

Hindi na lang ako nagsalita kahit naguguluhan ako sa kaniya.

"Gab, can you break up with Mika and get back with my daughter?"

"Pardon, Tito?" Kulang na lang ay lumuwa ang mga mata ko sa sobrang gulat.  Hindi ko ineexpect na marinig 'yun from him.  Siya kasi ang very eager noon na paghiwalayin kami ni Jelly at papuntahin siya sa States.

"You heard me, Gab.  I'm asking-- no, I'm begging-- you... leave your girlfriend and take my daughter back," he said with a hint of desperation.

Pinigil ko ang biglang pag-ahon ng galit sa dibdib ko.  Sino ba siya para utusan akong hiwalayan si Mika? Mika is my life.  I can't even imagine living my life without her tapos hihilingin niya sa akin na ipagpalit ko si Mika kay Jelly?  That's ridiculous!  And even if Mika and I aren't together, I just can't get back with her daughter because I don't love her anymore.

"I'm sorry po, Tito, but I love my girlfriend.  What I had with your daughter is just a part of my past.  I've moved on and I hope she has, too," mahinahong paliwanag ko para maintindihan niya ang side ko.  Hindi ko kasi alam kung bakit ginagawa ito ni Tito Mario.

"Listen to me, hijo... my daughter is dying," mangiyak-ngiyak na sabi niya.

I was too stunned for words.  Para akong tangang natulala habang tahimik na lumuluha si Tito Mario.  He covered his face with his hands.  I suddenly don't know what to say or do to comfort him.  Masakit din sa aking malaman ang kalagayan ni Jelly.
