The phenomenon that your life flashes before your eyes a few moments before you die, that you relive everything that happened all over again, a phenomenon which seems to be so absurd but appears to be correct. If Avi had the energy to express what was going on in his mind he would say that his memories weren't ordered, but a mess. Many of them were bright, filled with happy moments he would want to frame if possible. Considering how peaceful he lived it wasn't that outstanding but still a few dark parts found their way through and covered the good memories. Avi never had a hard childhood, always achieved the goal he was working for and ended up having everything a human being longed for. The problems however started right then and there, when he thought he had arrived at his destination.
"Baby, I thought you wanted a child?" Avi asked. His fiancé sat on the bed in front of him, her eyes red and puffy and in her hand a tissue. He sat on the floor, to her feet, and looked up searching her tear-stained eyes. "I-I do, but.. it's...". Avi was confused. Only a few minutes ago were they enjoying the dinner he had cooked for her. The both of them celebrated their sixth year of being a couple and they had planned to start a family with the child Clarissa was carrying. The fact that she was crying wasn't a result of having trouble with her hormones. Something else was bothering her. "Tell me, I won't be mad." It was his nature to calm others, he always put the person next to him first, keeping in mind that he could be hurt in the process. Clarissa wiped away her smudged make up and met the loving eyes of her soon-to-be hubsband, who worried why she was crying. Maybe it was wrong from her to ruin the special night but she had literally carried around the problem for a few months and now that she broke down in front of him there was no way back. "The child...isn't yours."
It took him a while before he realized what she had said. She apologized over and over again, tried to hug him but he didn't respond. She said she felt overly lonely when he was gone for over a year and when she was intoxicated by alcohol and forgot that it wasn't him it was already too late. She begged Avi to stay and raise the child with her if he really loved her, and Avi?
He didn't walk out the door, he didn't shut her out of his life, he didn't yell at her for cheating and basically breaking his heart and trust. He stayed because he was blinded by love. He loved her more than he loved himself, more than the fact that she didn't love him equally as much.
A few months passed by and their relationship got worse after the revelation. She ordered him around, told him how to behave in front of others although he was doing perfectly fine. She acted as if she had control over his life and Avi, who kept loving her, obeyed until he couldn't take it anymore and screamed at her how he wished she wouldn't be pregnant. A mistake which resulted into loosing her.
His head was hurting and he felt like a punching bag. Unable to move his body he slowly opened his eyes. His sight blurry and unsteady. He blinked a few times so he could get a clearer picture of his surroundings. He was in a room, the window was opened a little, letting the rays of the sun shine in and he himself was laying in a huge bed. His body was covered with multiple blankets which warmed up his body and next to him on the nightstand was a cup of hot tea. He tried to sit up a little but fell right back into his laying position due to the lack of energy. He closed his eyes in frustration and started to think.
Last night. He remembered running away into the darkness, away from his so called friends. He had no direct plan on where to go but it didn't matter. Away, that was important. He remembered stopping when his feet started to hurt and then.. coldness. The freezing air hitting his body. The heartache hurt more than the fossilizing cold. The rest is blurry. Avi opened his eyes again and looked towards the nightstand one more time, finding a small letter on top of it. He took it with his shaking hands and tried to focus on reading.
I'm downstairs if you need to talk. If not, the door is on the left. You don't have to thank me or anything. It's just important that you're alright.
Avi let his hand fall onto the bed as he furrowed his eyebrows. Last night, did someone rescue him? He really didn't want to live anymore and still someone decided otherwise. Avi gathered his strength to sit up and was already out of breath after such a small movement. Yes, there was a man who approached him and then there was a deep voice talking but he couldn't make out the words he was saying. Avi rubbed his forehead and decided to go downstairs. He carefully lifted one leg after the other out of the bed and waited a second before he stood up fully. His head spun and his vision blackened for a short amount of time. After being completely sure that he could stand steadily he took a few steps, keeping his arms away from his body just in case he would fall. What seemed to be an apartment resulted to be a house. A long corridor went through the building, offering many doors and a staircase which Avi took. He reached the bottom of the stairs. Now, he could just go without leaving any traces that he had been there but Avi's consciousness reminded him that it would be wrong. He turned right and walked towards the living room, wanting to thank the man for letting him crash at his house and for.. saving him although he wished the man wouldn't have done it.
