Always one step behind him. The wooden floor was cooler now, electrifying cold krept up his feet until he was barely able to move. Tim pointed at a piece of furniture, sank into his little world while recounting the day he had purchased it, sometimes combining his stories with little encounters. Avi's ears blocked the voice, he felt like they were stuffed with cotton, not letting through any clear sounds but muffled ones. It wasn't that he got bored by him, thought Tim's voice had the power to anodyne and take away the pain in his heart, but couldn't get his mind to concentrate. They left the livingroom, walked away from the light and immersed into the darkness of the corridor. Avi slowed down, letting his feet drag him along since they had their own will now. The walls next to him hightened with every step he took, the hallway extended endlessly, Avi's vision started to become blurry, Tim didn't notice and walked away. The bass forced his body to come to a standstill before he could faint, caused by his unsteady sight.
Tim stood at the bottom of the stairs when he looked back. Avi wasn't behind him, instead he had stopped in front of his photo wall, filled with his favourite pictures, capturing moments and feelings in 2D. The photograph of the girl, showing beauty and kindness, caught his attention. Avi's eyes lingered on hers, green like his, sparkling in the sun. Her smile, radiating, reached out to his heart but couldn't grasp it. His own was simply too cold, broken.
"She's beautiful isn't she?"
Tim smiled as he stepped closer, tracing the frame with his fingers. His gaze wandered from her to the smaller man who tilted his head in confusion.
"I'm a photographer in my spare time, wander around for hours until I find someone or something worth photographing. You see I found this girl on a playground. She wore that beautiful flower dress, it was summer, and a bunch of other children ran around. She sat there on the swing, watched them play when she noticed me. The playground was surrounded by a fence, looked like a prison and she walked up and stopped right in front of me without hesitating one second."
Avi's eyes watered a little, he didn't even know why. His arms, hugging his body in a protective mode. Something about the imprisoned child made his heart heavier. The longer he looked into her eyes the more he felt a connection between them.
"She smiled when she saw my camera. I asked if I could take a picture of her, but had to make sure that her mother would agree first. Her eyes widened and her smile diasppeared"
Tim sighed, his hand fell from the frame. His eyes never left the smaller man who appeared to shake a little.
"She's an orphan. I asked the caretaker if I could possibly talk to her on their playground. We sat side by side on those swings, talked about her hobbies and mine. Avi, that little girl knew about her past, knew that her mother gave her away when she was a few months old and never came back. No one ever looked for her father but she looked like the happiest girl on earth. She's eight now, I took the picture a few months ago."
Eight... Didn't something happen exactly eight years ago? Eight years. No matter how hard he tried, Avi just couldn't remember what it was.
Tim saw how he furrowed his eyebrows, tightened the grip around himself and whipped back and forth on his heels. He wondered what was going on in his mind.
"Are you alright, Avi?"
The bass shook his head slightly. Who was that girl? She looked so familiar: the brown hair, the cute little nose, her stunning green eyes... Even though Avi hated his voice, admitted that it was dreadful and everyone told him to fall silent forever, he pronounced the question which swirled around in his head, provoking a painful headache.
"W-what's..what's h-her n-n-name?"
Tim had noticed his stutter and began to worry if that would last forever.
"Ellie Grace"
Avi froze.
"You like that name? I think that one is pretty." One year in and they were already picking out baby names. Yes, Clarissa was pregnant with his baby, overjoyed and excited. Avi always told her how he wished to have a family in the future, kept looking for baby stuff and planned on how to furnish the little nursery. Now that she was actually pregnant he wasn't so sure anymore but wrapped himself in a blanket of positive thoughts. "Yeah I like that name too. What about both?" "A middle name?" She chuckeled, surfing through the internet, tried every single generator until they found a perfect name. "I got one!" Avi smiled widely. "It's beautiful. I can't wait to meet her."
