Her smile, vibrant reaching her eyes, making them shine and show a beautiful shade of green, similar to Avi's. Emerald green, fitting her long brown hair, dimples appearing when she grinned and giggled. Her voice, sweet and innocent. Such a beautiful child. Her little hand held the flower towards the crying bearded man, waiting for him to take her little gift so he would stop being sad once and for all.
"We have all been sad, Mister. But you will be happy soon, I promise."
Avi blinked a few times, letting her words sink in. Somehow he felt a little better inside. Tim could've said those exact words and he wouldn't have felt the same sensation in his heart. This little girl said it so easily, without thinking twice about it and that made him calm his thoughts.
"Sometimes I'm sad too but then I think that it could be worse."
Taking the flower from the child, Avi sat down in front of her, the fence still parting them. She giggled slightly when the man appreciated the gift and sat down as well, the world around them disappearing.
"How come you're in there?"
Avi tried hard not to stutter or to let her know that he was still shaken up, because even though his breathing was calmer now and his tears stopped falling his heart was beating in a fast pace. He watched how the girl flattened out her dress after sitting criss crossed on the ground, the red garment making her eyes look even more vibrant. Somehow Avi found that the child looked somewhat familiar to him, he had seen her in the picture but still couldn't grasp who she really was.
"Mrs. Anne said that I'm here so that one day I can finally go home with people who love me."
Realizing what the building behind her held made him wonder where her parents were. Who would abandon such a beautiful and polite kid? They must've been really desperate or stupid.
"Do you like it here?"
"Not always..."
Her eyes wandered down to her own hands where she began to play with the end of her dress. The fabric sliding between her fingers, while she shrugged. She wanted to talk about her issue but didn't want to bother the stranger since she knew that he had problems on his own. Tim stood a few feet away from them and observed their little interaction, covering his smile with a hand.
"Why not?"
She shook her head slightly, biting her lip before sniffing and forcing back her tears. The happy and careless child was gone, replaced with one who had endured too much negativity in her oh so few years on earth.
"Should I start?"
Raising her head she blinked through her watery eyes, looking at the man sitting in front of her, giving her a sympathetic smile.
"O-okay."
Avi nodded and reached forward, his hand inching closer to the girl's who didn't mind at all. With their pinkies hooked he began to tell a little extract of his life, leaving out the worst parts in order not to scare the child, knowing that it would scar her if she knew that she was talking to a former murderer.
"My wife and I lost a child when I wasn't at home. I'm a singer and on tour by the time she called. I've never seen our kid and everyday I wish I could've been there by her side..."
"I'm s-sorry to hear that, Sir."
"That's fine. Thank you."
Being young Avi was impressed how much the girl already knew about loosing children due to bodily failure or the intake of pills and such. She also knew about things like abortion and giving kids away because after all, she lived in an orphanage.
While Avi kept his story short, she used the time and the opportunity to pour her heart out in the presence of a total stranger."Everyday I see new ones coming in. They cry, not only babies but teens too. They want to go home, have parents, have a normal childhood. They tell me their wishes and scream at night when another day has passed by when they hope they could go home. I always stand at this fence, always. When it's sunny or when it rains. I get sick a lot because I don't wear a raincoat that often. I'm here because I think that I will see my parents walking by one day, and they will look at me and ask themselves why they let me go. Sir, I've been here ever since my mom left me, when I was a baby. Mrs. Anne doesn't know why the mother didn't want me but I found out later on that it was for the best.."
Gulping hard Avi thought about his friends and family before he got together with Clarissa, how close they've been and he had thrown everything away for her. That child, wiping her eyes in front of him had had it much worse. He would do everything so she could be happy at least for once.
"What happened to her?"
"Avi, we shouldn't.."
Tim's grip on Avi's shoulder went unnoticed by the smaller man and the child, the green eyes locked with one another as in a trance.
"She died in a car accident a few months later."
