The day past and night came to bring darkness to this corrupted world. I laid on my bed and waited for all the noise to settle down. Actually, I was waiting for no noise.

A few minutes went by and nobody was out in the hallways. I waited for a little while longer, then got up and left my room. I know I'm not supposed to do this, but I have to sneak out every night.

I put my cloak on and made sure that no one saw me exit the headquarters. I quietly opened the door and left. I shut the door and ran down the dirt road.

I put the hood over my head. The nearest town was about five miles away. It was quite far, but its all worth it. The silence of the night always scared me. I kept running until I got to the outskirts of town.

There were small lights coming from a few houses. It was late, and most people are asleep or at least going to sleep. I removed my hood and walked down the street.

I made it to a cottage nearby. It was old and there were lights coming from the inside. I walked to the front door and knocked.

I waited for a minute and Ms. Thomas opened the door. She gave me a smile.

"Hello, (y/n)." she said.

I walked into the warm cottage and gave her a hug.

"Hi." I said quietly. "Is he awake?"

"Yes, he is. He has been waiting."

"For how long?"

"For a few hours."

I walked down the small hallway and went into the last room to my right. Sitting on the bed, was (s/n). He looked over at me and smiled.

"Mommy!" he ran to me and I picked him up. I gave him a hug.

"Hi, sweetie, I'm back." I said.

He is the reason why I'm still here. If it wasn't for (s/n), I would've been dead.

My son is my everything. He is the reason why I joined the military. All the money I get from there is to buy him medicine for his sickness.

When he was a baby, I was told that he wouldn't live past the age of five. If he did, then it wouldn't be for long. I'm trying my best to make sure he stays alive for as long as possible. I left him with Ms. Thomas, so when I was working she could look after him.

Now that he is about three, he has gotten very sick. I used to see him once a week, but now that he is getting sicker I have to see him every night. I may never know if it will be the last time I see him.

I took him outside and we sat in the grass. Well I put him in my lap, and I sat on the ground. We were looking at the stars. That was his favorite thing to do. He was fascinated about the sky and the stars.

"Mommy, look!" (s/n) said tugging on my jacket.

I looked up at the sky and saw the shining bright lights.

"They're beautiful, aren't they?" I said.

"Uh huh! How many are there?" he asked.

"Millions and millions of them."

"What? That's not possible."

"It is possible."

(s/n) laid his head on my chest and yawned. I rubbed his head.

"Are you tired?"

"Yep...can you stay with me tonight?"

"I can't."

"Okay."

(s/n) and I stayed outside and watched the stars until he fell asleep. I just held him in my arms and kept watching the stars. I heard Ms. Thomas come by me.

"What did the doctor say?" I asked.

"He said that he probably have about three weeks to live." she said sadly.

I got up from the ground and held (s/n) closer to me.

"Mr. Floyd came by today to see (s/n). The boy was very excited to see his father," she sighed. "Floyd also said that he would like to see his wife sometime soon before..."
She looked at my distressed face and gave me a small smile.

"Lets take him inside. I bet you probably have to be heading back."

We went back inside the house and I put (s/n) back in his bed. I kissed his forehead and blew out the candle that was lit in his room. I put the hood back on my head and left the house.

I started running back to the HQ. It took me a good hour to run back and by the time I got there, no one noticed I was gone.

I quietly entered the building and made my way upstairs. I went inside my room and shut the door. Safe from trouble.

I pulled out a cigarette and match.

"1,369."

I lit it up and placed it in my mouth. I took off my uniform and left on the sweater I had under it. I took a deep breath and coughed. Too much smoke got into my lungs.

I pulled out the cigarette and coughed until the smoke was out of my system. I placed it back in my mouth and laid in bed.

Paychecks come tomorrow, which means a day off to spend that paycheck. Tomorrow I'll go see (s/n) and see what I can do to help him get better medicine. I already buy the most expensive and that lasts him a whole month.

I took another deep breath and blew out the smoke. I tapped the ash at the bottom and dropped the cigarette butt. I stepped on it.
I laid down once again and closed my eyes. Another day has gone, another will replace it.
