Brianna's PoV:
I woke up to the sound of sirens blaring. I notice that my maids aren't here, and I panic. Forgetting that I was just wearing a frilly, lace tank top and white jean shorts, I rush down the hall. I look down and see that I'm still wearing my diamond necklace with a pink gem. "Huh, I must've kept it on from last night," I think. I turn a corner to see a man with a black mask. I freeze, and the guy smirks. "Well, well... look who it is," he spats, circling me. "Back off," I say as commanding as possible. "I don't listen to girls," he drawls, pulling out a gun. Even though in my mind I'm telling myself to run, I don't. "Well then... you better start to," I warn, and kick him in the shin. Before he can react to my blow, I slap him three times in the face and elbow him twice in the stomach. He growls but manages to stand. "You don't know who you're messing with," he shakes his head vigorously. "Oh, I think I do," I shoot back, before punching him under the jaw, making a satisfying "crack". He winces in pain, and clenches his fist till his knuckles turn white. A warning sign goes off in my head, but I ignore it. I can't believe guards aren't here yet. Where are they?! That's when I realize that my suite is right next to a safe room. Smart, Bree, smart. The guards probably figured that I would know to just go in, but of course, I don't. Typical me. I decide that it's probably not safe to just leave this fight, when a random dude is trying to kill me.
"You think you're all that. But you're not. You're a weak, stupid, little girl," he shouts, trying to deplete my confidence. However, he's dumb. He doesn't know that I am the strongest girl in the competition. That I can knock the lights out of him if I want to. But I choose to play dumb, so that he will go easy on me, just in case he is more powerful than I am. I try to think of something super sad, like my sister dying. A tear barely trickles out of my eye, so I think of something even worse. Ummm... the prince dying. I think about never seeing him possibly propose, I think about never getting to spend time with him. Never getting to share funny, embarrassing and happy memories together. Now that makes me cry.
The man falls for my plan, and starts to laugh. But when he's not looking, I kick him in the *area.* (I'm not going to say the actual word cuz I'm just to innocent 😇) He cries out in pain, and yells. "You think I'm weak? Watch me," I challenge, and grab his hair. I tug and tug and tug, until he starts to whimper. "Shut up," I growl in his ear.
That's when I hear a loud thumping. I turn to see the prince and 4 guards following him. "Brianna!!!!" he screams over the loud noise of gunshots and explosions. "Yeah!?" I answer, still holding onto the guy's hair. "What are you doing out here?!!!!! I've been worried sick! All the other ladies and suitors are in safe rooms, and I thought you would be in one too! You could've been killed!!!!" he hollers. "But I didn't get killed!" I defend myself. "You were this close," he makes a pinching motion with his fingers. I roll my eyes, and he runs over to me. "What are you holdi-" he stops when he sees the guy. "Nevermind," he mumbles. "Your Highness... I-I'm innocent... I swear," the masked man pleads. "I know you're not, so don't try to fake it. If there's anyone who could be stronger than me, it's the girl you just messed with. And, by the way, I know for a fact that she never lies," Evan says firmly. He gestures for a guard to come over, and the guard handcuffs the man.
"C'mon, let's go to the safe room now," Evan takes my hand and tugs me into the cramped space. I crawl in to find a suitor. However, I didn't know it was one since it is pitch black. I scream, and Evan pulls me in close to him. "It's fine, darling. You're safe... it's just a suitor," he reassures me, stroking my hair. I sigh, and the suitor starts to talk. "Are you his Royal Highness?" he asks. "Yes, Sir... uh.." Evan stalls for a moment. "It's Blake, Your Highness."
I watch Evan's expression change from concerned, to angry. Before he can have a blowout, I poke his shoulder. "What's wrong?" I ask, softly, so that the suitor won't here. "I never told you about it, did I? Well, I was walking around looking for you, and I came across this man making out with Marabelle. You can't totally blame him, since Mara had a part in it too," he explains quietly. "Do you know for sure it was this guy?" I question, unsure. "Yes. I even asked my sister if it was him," he clarifies. I nod, and look at Blake. His messy hair is covering his eyes, and he seems to be quite calm. "Might I ask what you're doing?" I prod. "Reading," he responds, not looking away from what he's holding. "Cool, what book?" I ask, since I love to read. "Why do you need to be so nosy! Geez, personal advice to you, Prince Evan, but I suggest looking into other girls," Blake crosses his arms and slams the book closed. I glance over at Evan, who is steaming mad right now. "First off, don't tell me who to 'look into'. And secondly, Brianna isn't being nosy, she's just curious. So... unless you have something to hide... there is no need to be offended," Evan stated. That shut Blake up.
After 30 minutes or so... a guard opens the door of the safe room. "Your Highness, it is safe now," he reports. "Good... is everyone alright?" Evan asks. The guard replies, "Yes, Your Highness. Your family is fine, so are the contestants. Umm, but..." he looks down at the floor. "What? What happened?!" Evan demands, hugging me tight. "Your Highness, the rebels were mainly attacking the neighborhood where Lady Brianna used to live. I'm assuming that they have something against her," the guard predicts. Apparently, the guard still doesn't know that I am Brianna, but I stay quiet. "What could Brianna have possibly done to make someone feel the need to threaten her?" Evan wonders out loud. "We don't know, Your Highness... but we've come her to inform you about the status of her family."
"And? What about her family?" he asks, holding my hand, squeezing it every so often.
"Um... Your Highness? Her sister, Heather, has died."
