The Coolest Boyfriend
"Hey, [First Name]-chan, how can you date that... that gorilla?"
With a cookie still in her mouth, [Name] looked at her friend. She ate it quickly. "W-What do you mean, [Friend 1's Name]-chan?" she asked carefully. Her relationship with her boyfriend, Okamura Kenichi, had always been a shaky topic between all of her friends. [Friend 2's Name] quickly interjected. "It's just that he's not even handsome." [Name] frowned.
[Friend 3's Name] quickly finished drinking her soda. "If anything, I'd want to be with Himuro-kun. He's sooo dreamy!" she cooed. All the girls, except [Name], sighed wistfully.
"That's not fair to say when you don't even want to talk to Ken-chan," [Name] stated, crossing her arms. All of her friends looked to each other. "Well, it's just that we don't see the appeal," [Friend 3's Name] finally said. The rest of the girls nodded in agreement.
[Name] sighed. "I wouldn't expect you guys to understand my feelings toward him. But, what made me first fall in love with him was...," she trailed off with her thought. While trying to find the right word, all three of her friends leaned in close.
"Cool! Ken-chan is just really cool!" she exclaimed, hitting the table with excitement.
Silence set as all the girls let the thought sink in.
"Um, [First Name]-chan, I don't think that you understand what cool means," [Friend 2's Name] said. [Name] just cocked her head to the side. "What do you mean? Ken-chan is very cool." One of the girls whispered to the other. "Well, a cool person is just really chill. Like, Himuro-kun. He's nice to everyone and rarely loses his composure," [Friend 1's Name] explained.
[Name] shook her head. "While I will admit that Himuro-kun is cool, he doesn't have the same kind of coolness that Ken-chan has," she said," Like when I first met him, he saved me from a bunch of thugs." Everyone gasped. "You never told us that!" [Friend 3's Name] yelled. [Name] looked down sheepishly. "It's not like the thugs went up to me. I just remember Ken-chan walking next to me and whispering in my ear that some drunk fools were following me. In fact, he turned me around and pointed somewhere just to give me an excuse to see that he was telling the truth. They looked really scary, and I'm sure bad things would've happened if he wasn't there," she confessed.
"I guess I kinda understand. He's cool in like a manly way, right?" [Friend 2's Name] asked. [Name] nodded vigorously. [Friend 1's Name] shook her head. "I'll never get you, [First Name]-chan," she said. [Name] shrugged. "I never said you exactly had to," she mumbled, taking another cookie from the tray. She started back on her homework assignment. She did tell her parents that she'd be studying with her friends, so she was determined to do just that.
SMASHHHH!
Everyone looked up from whatever they were doing. "[Friend 3's Name]-chan, didn't you say that your parents aren't home?" [Name] asked. Slowly, the girl nodded. Everyone held their breaths as they heard gruff voices coming from somewhere in the lower parts of the house.
As carefully as possibly, everyone found their own hiding place. [Name] was nestled in the clothes in the closet. She looked over to where [Friend 1's Name] was at and saw her call the police. [Name] took her own phone out of her pocket and dialed in a number she knew by heart.
Brrrring... Brrrring...
"Hello?"
She felt relieved when she heard his voice. "K-Ken-chan, I need help," she said barely above a whisper. "What's wrong, [First Name]?" he asked. She covered the phone and listened for the burglars before answering him. "I'm at [Friend 3's Name]'s house... You know where she lives, right? A-Anyways, there's these burglars downstairs-"
Heavy footsteps up the stairs made her stop talking. "O-Oh my god, I think one of them came upstairs-" She cut herself off when she heard the burglar stop in front of their door. Ever so quietly, she could hear Okamura ask if she was okay. Quickly, she put the phone up to her ear. "Help." She ended the call and turned her phone off. Just as she did, the door creaked open. No sound was heard in the room.
[Name] was grateful for her small stature; without it, she wouldn't be able to nestle into the denser parts of the closet. She backed up until her back softly hit the wall. She contorted her body so that she wasn't exposed. A second after she found the perfect position, the closet door opened. Even though she couldn't see the guy, she could feel his steely gaze glance over the space. She heard his footsteps walk away. She sighed in relief, not noticing until it was too late that the man was still in earshot of the room.
She froze up. She prayed internally that he hadn't heard her. Sadly, fate was not on her side as she heard him walk up to the closest. Even though she couldn't see through the clothes, she knew that the burglar was about to reveal her hiding place. The loud noise of another vase being broken startled the both of them. Her hands went to the front of her mouth. A loud curse was heard from the story below them.
The man in the room sighed and went downstairs. The noises and cursings continued. She covered her ears. Even though everything was like a whisper through the clothes, she still found it to be too noisy. Her heart was beating faster than it had ever beaten before. Her tears that had stopped before now starting to run down her red cheeks.
"[First Name]? Are you in here?"
Hearing the familiar voice of the person [Name] loved made her have to courage to peek her head out of the closet. He was standing in the middle of the room, looking around. His eyes finally fell towards her figure. The relief that he had on his face made her heart flutter; he had been worried about her. He pulled her out from her hiding place and embraced her. "Are you okay? Did they hurt you?" he asked. She shook her head and looked up to him.
She gasped when she saw his face. "Ken-chan, you're bleeding!" She touched the area around his various cuts and bruises. He put his hand over her own, the smaller hand easily being engulfed by his bigger one. "It's no real problem, [First Name]. It would hurt me more if you were hurt," he said, leaning down close to her. She closed her eyes, knowing that he was going to kiss her.
A chorus of soft 'awww's made her push him away in embarrassment. She had totally forgotten that her friends were still here. She glanced over to her friends, who had a far away look in their eyes. Suddenly, sirens could be heard from a distance. "I should go meet them. Don't worry, I took care of them all," he said, kissing her forehead before looking at her friends,"Are you guys okay?" They nodded in unison.
He walked away from their sight. Her eyes stayed at the door for a while before turning to her friends. "Are you sure your alright? I mean, I'll probably stop staying home alone for a long time-" [Friend 3's Name] cut her off. "Was that Okamura, [First Name]-chan?" she asked. All the other girls nodded in agreement, their wide eyes still sparkling. [Name] nodded. "I thought you've all seen him before?" she asked. [Friend 1's Name] was the first to answer.
"It's just that... He seemed a lot different than usual," she noted. [Friend 2's Name] nodded. "It was like I said earlier. Okamura-kun is cool in a manly way!" she exclaimed. The friends sighed in a dreamily way just as they had before when talking about Himuro. Short exclamations of his bravery and manliness made [Name] blush. She clapped a couple time to get their attention.
"I like that you like Ken-chan more, but don't try to steal him away from me! I-I'll even fight for him! I swear!"

Okamura is a special kind of cool that needs to be appreciated by more people!
And yes, this was heavily inspired by the anime "My Love Story!" Takeda and Okamura share a lot of the same traits, you know.
