Walking Away

It was hard for [Name] to navigate the streets when she didn't know where she was.

The streetlamps glowed ominously in the distance. The buildings by her were quickly illuminated by passing cars, showing the empty rooms inside. Her breath was heavy and warm. She watched the puffs of air she was letting out waft away in the wind. She trudged through the cold while hugging the thin jacket she had on.

And yet, she hadn't felt it. Everything around her but the sidewalk before her was a blur of shapes and colors. A mixture of tears, snot, and what felt like loss pride kept rolling down her face.

It all seemed surreal. Everything had been perfect. The sun was shining and while the birds sang their cliched songs. This morning he had been kissing her neck and calling her beautiful; holding hands in the hallways while laughing; teasing each other at lunch; being happy and in love. And yet, with a single talk from an old boyfriend had snapped the fragile line that had kept him to her.

His personality had turned upside down from the moment. He was silent for a long period of time before finally confronting her. Apparently, he had thought that she was still in love with her old boyfriend. While she knew that the flame of the first love she had with him would never die out, the feelings that she felt for him, her current boyfriend, was much more intense.

I don't love you anymore, [Last Name].

Those words still could make her heart clench in pain. She knew that he had spoken the truth. While most people would argue, he had just walked away from her. Watching his figure grow smaller and smaller in the distance, she knew that there was no way for them to go back to where they were in the morning.

Instead of going inside and drowning her sorrows in rom-coms and ice cream, she dropped her bag next to her door. Her legs moved by herself. [Name] found herself walking away from him, just like he had done to her.

How long she had been walking for was a question that she wouldn't be able to answer. There was a soreness in her legs, but it wasn't enough to make her stop in her tracks. If anything, she would have to stop because she was thirsty. A lone soda machine next to a bench made her decide to stop.

Her arms went to her side instinctively. She stopped when she realized that she hadn't gotten her purse. She cursed softly and kicked the machine in anger. Just as she was going to punch it, a hand grabbed her wrist. She heard a familiar chuckle from behind her. "What did that poor machine ever do to you?"

[Name] jerked her hand away and turned towards the person. "Hey, Teppei. How are you?" she asked while crossing her arms. His eyebrows furrowed while looking at her. Even though her face had a neutral expression, her eyes were downcast and she seemed like she was trying to make herself as small as possible. "That's a question I should be asking you," Kiyoshi stated with amusement. She snorted and looked towards the soda machine. He took this subtle hint and gave her his jacket. "Sit down on the bench. It looks like you walked all the way over here, and you must be tired." She watched as he walked over to the machine and got her favorite drink.

The can seemed warm against her cold fingers. She thanked him softly before drinking it. He sat down next to her. "So, how did you wander all the way over here?" he asked. She stayed silent and focused on her drink. He nodded to himself. "The only reason I'm here is because we decided that we should treat Riko to a dinner for her birthday. It's at a nearby steakhouse. We just got done with everything. Kagami ate the rest of everyone's steaks! I knew he could eat a lot, but I didn't know how much he could!" There was a hint of a smile on her face. His face started to heat up at her cuteness.

After a while of silence, she finally spoke up. "Um... Do you remember [Boy's Name]? I think you guys met once." Kiyoshi's smile wavered. Yes, he had remembered the person who was her boyfriend. He had never been impressed by him. If anything, the boy seemed like he was taunting him. There was a certain vibe that came off of him. "Yes, I do remember him. He's your boyfriend, right?" She nodded but stopped herself. "Actually, he was. We... We just broke up," she said quietly.

The silence grew awkward as Kiyoshi tried to wrap his mind around this new fact. Did this mean that he had a chance? His heartbeat quickened in anticipation. He couldn't imagine a world where [Name] would reject him. Surely she had to share the same feelings as he did. There was just no way that she didn't.

"I have something to tell you!"

The words came out of their mouths at the same time. They both grew flustered. "Um, you should go first, Teppei," she said softly. He shook his head. "It's alright. It seems like you have something important to say."

She opened her mouth and closed it until she could find the words that she wanted to say. "I don't know what I'd do without you, Teppei," she said. He turned his face away from her while his face turned bright red. "I feel the same way, [First Name]," he admitted. His hand was reaching over to the hand that she had rested on her lap. Just as he was going to confess his feelings to her, she spoke.

"I'm glad I have a friend like you."

The feeling that he got was like someone poured ice all over his grave and had a party over it. Despite his inner despair, he managed to crack a smile at her. "The feeling is mutual, [First Name]-san," he said. He was quite impressed with his ability to keep his voice steady. She smiled softly at him. "Didn't you have something to say, Teppei?" she asked.

His eyes frantically darted around the area as he tried to find something new to tell her. When his eyes finally rested on her face, he knew what he had to say. He couldn't tell her his feelings and ruin their relationship. He closed his eyes and sighed. He was content being her best friend at the moment... He was, wasn't he?

"I forgot what I wanted to say, [First Name]. I'm sure it was something along the lines of what you said. Do you want me to take you home?" he asked. She shook her head and stood up. "I didn't take any turns so as long as I go straight down the street I should arrive there sooner or later." She started to take off his jacket, but Kiyoshi stopped her. "You can just give it back to me at school," he said. She smiled and hugged him.

He flinched a bit in surprise before wrapping his arms around her figure. "Thanks for being there for me, Teppei," she mumbled into his chest. A small, sad smile formed on his lips. He hugged her longer than would be normally accepted. When he felt her try to push him away, he let go of her.

"I'll see you later, okay? Goodbye, [First Name]." He walked towards his house, which was the other way from her house. She waved goodbye to him, smiling at him until she couldn't see him anymore. Despite the smile on her face, the familiar feeling of dread and sorrow invaded her soul. Her smile faltered as she realized that she was replaying the same scenario again.

Another person had walked away from her and left her with an empty feeling.
