Chapter 27
Carter's POV
"Are you done?" I asked flatly, interrupting Cole's speech.
Cole abruptly stopped talking and gave me a hard look. I didn't appreciate the disapproval in his eyes; he wasn't in charge of me, in fact I was his Alpha.
Cole eventually looked away when I didn't break eye contact.
"We're just worried about you Carter," Cole mumbled so low I had to use my advanced hearing to figure out what he had said.
"I don't need your pity," I spat out, making him flinch.
Although I felt bad for being a jerk, I couldn't help it.
Ever since I had let Hayden leave the pack everyone around me had become more cautious. It was like they were expecting me to shift and attack them at any minute. I probably could have too. Since that day my wolf had been constantly trying to come out. It was too easy to lose control, especially now.
Cole stood up, nodded at me, and walked out the door.
I leaned back in my chair running a hand through my hair. Looking at the clock I realized it was almost midnight, not like it mattered; I hardly slept anymore. I had been staying in my office at the pack building for almost a month now. I couldn't spend too much time at my house anymore, it still smelled like her.
All I did all day was shut myself up in my office and keep tabs on a certain group of trackers I had sent to check in on Hayden. I knew it was breaking pack law because they were trespassing on Derek's territory, but it was the very outskirts where she lived and I needed to make sure she was safe. However I was still waiting for a call from them to tell me everything was okay.
No one had found out who my mate was, and I was keeping it that way. She would be in much more danger if that were the case.
I was still worrying though. Usually the trackers would check in with me daily but they hadn't called yet.
Taking a deep breath, I fought the urge to shift- my wolf would only go running for Hayden. He had wanted to bring her back since the very day we had let her go, so I was constantly fighting to keep him from taking over control- it was exhausting.
The sound of the phone ringing on my desk snapped me out of my concentration. I picked up after the first ring.
When I heard Alpha Derek on the other side I knew something was wrong. We weren't on good terms so I knew he wouldn't just be calling for anything.
Did he find out I had wolves in his territory?
"What do you want?" The harshness in my voice was obvious.
Derek starting chuckling darkly.
"It isn't what I want, Carter, it's what you will want back."
He definitely had my trackers. I growled through the phone.
"Easy there," his voice was full of humor, "I'm willing to make a trade."
I felt my wolf struggling to be let free. I hated not being in control. If I knew anything about Derek it was that he wouldn't give them back easily. He still hadn't let our parents' feud go, and probably wanted revenge.
"If you ever want to see your little mate again then you-"
"What!" I growled loudly.
He had Hayden? How could he possibly know that she was my mate?
I felt myself shaking and my claws had appeared.
A million questions were running through my head. I didn't realize that I had crushed the phone with my hand until I looked down. It was broken into pieces on my desk.
Before I knew what I was doing, my wolf finally caught me off guard and shifted. I let him jump through the window of the second story building.
We landed on the ground easily and the next thing I knew we were howling up at the night sky.
I was going to murder Derek.
All I could see was red as I began sprinting through the woods.
