Chapter 18
I woke up the next morning staring at the golden moon across the room.
I sighed and decided to get up since it was nine. I had hardly slept last night and I could feel my body ache from the lack of sleep when I got up.
I sat down in the kitchen and Ava came in, fully dressed with a plate of fresh pancakes.
"Morning Hayden, sleep okay?" She said softly and set the plate down while studying my face.
I could only half-smile. "Yeah."
I was aware she could probably see the dark circles under my eyes that I was struggling to keep open.
She said nothing else and went to bring me some juice.
I stared down at the delicious food that normally I would be devouring, but I didn't really have an appetite.
I couldn't stop thinking about last night.
Ava came back into the kitchen with a glass of apple juice in her hand.
"Thanks." I said, pausing. "So...did he..." I trailed off.
Ava seemed to know what I was trying to ask.
"He didn't show up at all, but don't worry. He just needs time to calm down is all." She smiled and I tried to believe her.
"I hope he's not that mad." I mumbled out.
Ava seemed to hear me but she just started humming a melody while she scrubbed dishes.
I ended up staying with Ava for a few more hours until I built up the nerve to go back to Carter's room. I needed to shower and get dressed some time but wanted to continue avoiding him.
I took a deep breath and walked through the already opened door that looked to be hanging on only one hinge.
The room looked the same it had when I left yesterday. It didn't look like anyone had been there since. I went further and walked down the hall. No one.
I went in my bathroom and locked the door deciding to take a shower since Carter wasn't coming back anytime soon. At least I hoped he wasn't.
I threw on jeans and a sweatshirt, along with some boots. I put my hair up in a messy bun not feeling the need to look nice for anything.
I was just walking down the stairs to the second floor so I could go back into the kitchen when I ran into someone running around the corner.
I staggered back confused and hands came out to balance me.
"Sorry Hayden."
I looked up at Cole feeling a wave of emotions go through me.
I hadn't seen him since the forest incident.
"Cole!" I exclaimed wrapping my arms around him.
"H-ey" Cole said chuckling. "I haven't seen you in a while."
"Yeah about that, thanks for coming to see me." I said accusingly.
"Sorry, I've been... busy lately." He gave me an apologetic look.
I was too happy to be mad at him.
"Really?" I said sarcastically.
What do werewolves even do to keep them this busy?
It was then that I realized I hadn't seen Cole since I found out about werewolves.
Cole seemed to catch on to my glare towards him.
