Chapter 21
Over the past few weeks, I had begun to doubt that this would have ever happened.
But as I walked towards my mom and dad now, I realized how much things could change in so little time.
It was like a little family reunion in the middle of the airport. I ran the last couple of steps to my mom and she wrapped her arms around me, embracing me in a hug. I could tell the separation had been hard for her judging by her expression.
"Hey mom."
"Hay, your finally back! And who's this young man?" My mom gave Cole a questioning look and I knew I shouldn't have been surprised that she didn't remember him from the party back in Tennessee.
"He just made sure I got here okay." I said looking at Cole.
He smiled and nodded. "Glad I could help." He looked like he was about to leave. When he turned and started walking a few steps away I snapped out of my daze.
"Wait Cole!"
I ran up to meet him as he turned back around.
He had an expressionless face- a Carter one- and he waited for me.
"I just wanted to say, thanks. And if you uh, see..."
"-I'll see Carter, but it won't be pleasant." He said shaking his head.
"He's not going to be in a good mood." Cole muttered running a hand through his hazel hair.
I tried to act like I didn't hear him.
"Well I guess this is goodbye then."
Cole suddenly sobered up. "You know you want a hug." He said grinning.
Instead of making a snide remark I went in his warm embrace and said my goodbye.
"I won't see you again, will I?" I asked finally, afraid to hear his answer.
"Not likely Hayden." He shoved his hands in his pockets and gave me one last nod before walking away.
I forced myself to turn back to my parents, not wanting to stare after Cole, who I'd probably not ever see again.
"What was all that about?" My dad asked me, concern covering his face.
"Don't worry dad, he's just a good friend who I probably won't see ever again."
On the way back to our house I told my parents I was too tired to answer any of their questions about the last few weeks.
They hesitated but let me go up to my room.
I slowly walked up the stairs to the second floor and opened my bedroom door.
I hadn't been in here for at least a month but my room looked the same as I left it. Clothes were scattered around on the ground, my closet door was half open, and my suitcase was lying on my bed. I started unpacking everything that my mom must have brought back for me. I collected most of the dirty clothes on my floor and stuffed them in the basket outside my door. I then laid down in my bed feeling exhausted. I hadn't gotten much sleep when Carter was missing. A sharp pain shot through my chest at the thought of him.
Why had he been acting so weird when he came back? Why did he completely ignore me? Valerie had to be involved in this.
I then remembered some of what Cole had told me.
If I was his mate then he wouldn't have kicked me out. He wouldn't of acted like he didn't care. I could almost see his face and the look he had given me when he told me to leave. Cole probably made up all the crap about mates just to make me feel better. Or just to mess with me.
I swallowed the lump forming in my throat.
I stopped myself from thinking anything else and I shut my eyes.

I was startled out of my sleep and I jumped. I tried to remember what I had been dreaming about, but my mind came up blank.
I got up out of bed taking a shaky breath and headed toward my bathroom. I gulped down a glass of water, feeling dehydrated and dizzy.
I walked back to my bed and slid under the covers ignoring the weird sensation I had.
I moved to my side.
Then I turned on my other side.
Then I flipped on my back.
I couldn't help but get an uneasy feeling in my stomach.
I nervously checked the clock and took some deep breaths. Why was I feeling like this?
After hearing a little voice in my head I glanced out of my window and that's when I saw it. At least I think I saw it.
I could have sworn a dark figure was standing outside looking up at my window. Chills immediately went through my body and I blinked rapidly looking back down to see if it was really there.
All I could see this time was blackness and the outlines of trees. The figure of the person was no where to be found but I still peeked out the window, looking amongst the trees.
Every hair on my body was sticking straight up.
I quickly shut my blinds and curtains and jumped back under the covers.
What was that? Or who was that?
I tried to calm myself down.
It was probably just my imagination.
But the constant beating of my heart kept reminding me of what I had seen.
I made sure that my window was completely covered and I pulled the blankets over my head trying to shake the feeling I was having.
If only Carter was here I would feel safe.
As the words ran through my mind, I began to realize how true they were.
I reached over to the foot of my bed where I had thrown my sweatshirt I had gotten from Carter's room in my closet.
I grabbed it quickly jumping back under the covers, and hugged it.
I pulled it close to my face, taking in a deep breath almost smelling his scent.
I squeezed the sweatshirt as another sharp pain went through my chest.
I truly did miss him...
