Chapter 16
My day with Liam, Blake, and Luke had finally come to an end.
Liam seemed a little relieved that he didn't have to be around me any longer, but so was I.
All I wanted to do was find out some answers and be less confused, but Liam couldn't cooperate. All he wanted to do was make fun of me and show how 'weak and human' I was by racing me places, eating way more than I did in a week at one meal, and push me around.
Seriously, he's like the big brother I never wanted, I thought to myself.
I was actually pretty exhausted from running around all day with Liam, but that didn't stop me from asking Carter more questions when he returned later that night.
We were in his room now, and I was lounging on a black leather sofa while he sat behind a wooden desk in the corner. Papers were scattered everywhere in front of him, and on top of one of the piles was his laptop he was staring at.
I was secretly stealing glances his way, noticing how his biceps would flex and he would clench his jaw every now and then. Sometimes he would run his hand through his dark black hair and mutter something about 'weak packs wasting his time', but I kept to myself for once and stayed quiet, pretending to listen to the TV that was on.
Some NCIS show was on and although I usually loved to watch it, one question was stuck in my mind.
I bit my lip, not wanting to blurt out something stupid and then sighed loudly putting my head in my hands.
I hated spare time to think everything through.
Everything over the past last two weeks had been nothing but stressful and confusing.
I still wasn't quite sure if I was dreaming this whole time, but something seemed to disappoint me if I had dreamt it all. Besides, my imagination wasn't that wild.
"Hayden?"
Carter's soft voice made me snap out of my worries and it wasn't because he had called me. His tone was really different than any other time he spoke to me.
It actually sounded a little nice for once.
"Hmm" I said surprised he was actually waiting for a reply.
He turned away from his desk to fully face me.
"What's the matter?"
"Nothing." I said sniffing.
Since when did he care anyways.
Carter got up and walked over, sitting on the coffee table in front of my chair.
"Nothing?" He said unsure.
I nodded and looked away.
"Then why are you crying?" His brow creased with worry.
It took me a minute to actually figure out that I was indeed crying. "Ugh!" I said, frustrated. Feeling the wet tears rolling down my face, I quickly wiped them away.
"Hayden." His tone was more stern and he reached over to put my chin up, so I faced him.
I didn't dare say a word, in fear of breaking down again- which was not going to happen.
Carter leaned in closer so I could see every detail of his face. His bright blue eyes that were frames in dark lashes. His high cheekbones angled just the right way. And his lips, his completely full, red lips.
He slowly reached up with the back of his hand to wipe a tear off my cheek.
I focused on my steady breathing that was beginning to pick up as I stared into his eyes.
The bright blue was now starting to swirl into a darker one, making them look more mysterious.
He looked down once, at my own lips, and then leaned in closer so I could feel his light breathing on my cheek.
I had lost track of time, but somewhere in between now and then, I had shut my eyes and now all I could think about were how good his lips felt pressed against my own.
