Chapter 2
The next day was spent hiking in the trails and going to the lake half a mile down the road to fish and swim.
Later that evening, we sat down outside to have dinner.
"So did you hear what that store owner said about mysterious creatures out here in the woods?" My mom suddenly asked with a grin spreading across her face.
"Yeah that was something" my dad replied.
I thought back to when we stopped for gas at the gas station and after we paid, the store owner asked us where we were staying.
After we told him we were staying around here, he started telling us of the old tales of the woods.
What stuck out to me was how he said there were 'mysterious creatures' out in the woods.
I asked him what he meant about the 'mysterious creatures'. I couldn't help but think back to my encounter in the woods.
The guy looked taken aback, almost like he had said to much. He didn't expect me to ask him to explain.
"Well, there are some pretty scary bears....and wolves and such" he answered in a strained tone.
I kept asking him more questions about the animals but my dad had to stop me so we could finally leave.
"-Yeah Hayden, you seemed pretty interested in what he was saying about the animals" my dad commented while looking at me questionably.
I was snapped out of my thoughts and I realized my dad was actually talking to me.
I shrugged and answered "just curious" almost to quickly.
My dad turned to give a weird look at my mom, even though he knew I could see.
"Well I'm getting tired. Ill be in my room if you need me." I excused myself and went inside.
After I sat down in my room I got out a book from my wooden chest, since I wasn't actually that tired yet.
I knew reading would relax me.
I woke up to the sound of Maggie scratching at my door.
I groggily got up and went to let her in my room to see what she wanted.
I opened my door but instead of her coming in she ran to the other front door to show she had to go to the bathroom.
As I opened the door and took a step outside with her I realized it must have been late at night since my parents were sleeping and it was dark outside.
If it weren't for the outside light hanging over the door, it would be completely black outside.
As Maggie ran off to go to the bathroom I couldnt help but feel the same strange feeling as last time I was out in the woods alone.
It felt like something was watching me from somewhere in the darkness.
I quickly looked around while backing up to put my hand on the doorknob.
You're just being paranoid I told myself.
I wanted to go back inside but I didn't want to call out for Maggie who had disappeared. I felt like breaking the silence would do something bad. And I didn't want to leave Maggie out here if something truly was watching me.
I shuddered at the thought and just about changed my mind to go back inside when out of the corner of my eye I caught a sudden movement in the trees.
I didn't dare call out for Maggie because when I saw a pair of eyes staring back at me from in the dark woods, I knew it wasn't her.
The two eyes seemed to be glowing and animalistic looking.
The only weird thing about them was that they were a bright blue.
I only got to see them for half a second because right after I spotted them, they disappeared.
I yanked the door open and jumped inside really fast.
I then left the door open a tiny crack to call out for Maggie.
When she finally came she bolted into the cabin as well.
I shut the door tight and locked it, even though I was sure whatever was in the woods couldn't open the door in the first place. You never know, I thought.
I quietly went back to bed and Maggie ran into my room before me, whimpering.
"Did you see that too?" I whispered to her.
I knew I wasn't imagining things because those eyes were so real. I could still see them, staring straight back at me.
I took a deep breath trying to calm myself. That can't come into the cabin, I kept repeating to myself.
I almost cried out when I noticed my shade to my window wasn't drawn so I could see a part of the forest out there.
I ran to the window and yanked down the shade while shutting my eyes.
I did not want to see those pair of eyes ever again.
I finally snuggled up with Maggie and drifted off to sleep, while those two strange glowing eyes kept haunting me.
