Chapter 11

I woke up with a headache and lazily stretched out across the bed. Turning toward the night stand, I noticed it was 6 am.

I sighed and rolled over to try to sleep some more, when I realized I was not alone.

Sure enough, Carter was sprawled out next to me, sleeping peacefully. He looked completely different with his features relaxed, and not tensed.

I still couldn't help the scream that escaped my mouth as I pushed myself as far away as I could from him.

Thankfully the bed was big enough so I didn't fall off the edge.

Carter woke up, and after looking at me, he sat up yawning and stretching.

"What are you doing here?!" I yelled. My voice was groggy from just waking up.

"Sleeping?" Carter squinted at me.

"Um, not with me your not! Get out of my bed!" I couldn't help but notice how his dark hair was sticking up, and how his black shirt rose up, exposing his tan abs.

"Actually, your in my bed." He pointed out, smirking.

I scoffed at him.

"I was here first." I stated, sounding like a little kid again.

Carter just shrugged. "It's fine, your the one who was cuddling with me last night."

Wow, was this guy cocky.

"What are you talking about? You know, you are the most arrogant jerk I have ever met!" I jumped out of bed and stormed off, not really sure where I was going.

I heard Carter behind me. "We could share it?"

I decided to head out the door and down the hall trying to figure out how to get out of this twenty floor mansion.

"Hayden." Carter started following behind me and chuckling, which made me quicken my pace.

I found some stairs and prayed to God that I wasn't going to get lost.

I was supposed to be trying to find a way out, but when I walked past the kitchen that smelled amazing, I couldn't resist.

I walked through the doors and headed straight to where the smell was coming from.

I recognized the kitchen from yesterday when Valerie had showed me around.

I sat on a bar stool that faced the counter where the actual cooking was going on and grabbed a muffin on a near by center plate.

"Well I guess you do know your way around." Carter said grinning at me, while I took a bite out of the delicious blueberry muffin.

I ignored him and continued eating.

"You can't ignore me forever Hayden." Carter finally said after a couple of minutes. I was satisfied to see the frown covering his face.

I was getting on his nerves.

"Just leave me alone Carter." I told him, irritably.

I didn't understand him at all.

"Is he bothering you?"

I turned back around to find a woman in a chefs hat smiling at me. She looked around late thirties, with her dark hair pulled to the side in a braid. Her warm brown eyes met mine and I felt a strange sensation of comfort.

"I'm Ava, by the way." For looking almost forty, she looked really pretty.

"Oh, I'm Hayden."

"Of course!" She said happily. "And I see you tried some of my freshly baked muffins!"
