Chapter 1

"Honey, we're here!" I heard my mom say excitedly as my dad pulled into a driveway, leading us deeper into the woods.

I pulled out my headphones and looked around as a cabin came into view.

Me and my parents were going to spend the fourth of July in a cabin in the middle of no where.

We traveled across the state to arrive here at the outskirts of Tennessee. So south, we were almost to Georgia where it was sunny and warm, and not to mention abandoned. It was a ten hour drive from where we lived, in Michigan and I wasn't used to not having any neighbors.

There was no one around for about a mile and there was nothing but a gas station, that was 2 miles away.

My parents loved the outdoors, and had raised me to love them also. They insisted we spend two weeks down here in the wilderness.

As we got closer I looked around at the tall trees that surrounded our cabin. The woods around here was really thick and I couldn't see anything past it.

There was a small opening in the trees, just big enough for the cabin and a pond that was near the opposite edge.

As soon as my dad shut off the engine my mom opened her door and jumped outside, looking at the cabin. She looked like a seven year old about to go exploring somewhere unknown.

I rolled my eyes at her which earned a chuckle from my dad.

"Come on Hay, we better get unpacking"

I opened my door, letting our chocolate lab Maggie out, and stepped outside while filling my lungs with fresh air.

I couldn't wait to pick out my room in the cabin.

I grabbed my bags out of the back and stepped inside the cabin, after my dad had unlocked it.

"Ohhhh" my mom breathed as she walked in.

I was surprised too. The cabin was decently big. Just as we walked in we entered the living room, which had a few couches and a TV. I knew we wouldn't be using it much but it still was nice.

I walked out of the living room to an opening where there was a cute little kitchen and a dining room.

As soon as I spotted the hallway that led to the bedrooms I ran to it while checking the doors as I went.

The first door was a bathroom, the second door was a bedroom with a queen bed, and the room at the end of the hallway, had a perfect sized bed. This room, I decided while throwing my bags on the ground, was my room.

It had the bed in one corner and a small closet on the opposite wall. There was also a chest at the end of the bed and a night stand to the right of it.

I started unpacking immediately and then stole a glance out my window which was on the far wall. The view wasn't much, since all there was was trees, but it wasn't bad.

I decided to go outside to explore more as I headed back to the living room.

"Mom, Dad, can I go walk around for a while?" I asked, pleading them to let me go explore.

"As long as you don't go far" my dad said as my mom emptied out a box and smiled. "Oh and take Maggie with you!" My dad added.

I walked around the perimeter until behind the cabin I found a trail leading into the woods.

Being the curious person I am I immediately started following the path going deeper into the woods.

The path was pretty narrow and Maggie was running along the edge, sniffing everything in sight.

I liked the way the woods were towering over me. Actually, they were kind of intimidating.

I was walking for ten minutes or so, until I came across a small river flowing through along side the path.

I was trying to see where it had come from when I heard a loud snap from behind me.

I quickly spun around to find Maggie no where to be found.

I searched where I had just heard something and called out to her.

I was sure it was Maggie until she came running out from behind me whimpering.

"What's the matter?" I asked her as a strange feeling came over me.

I suddenly felt like I was being watched by someone else. Or something else.

I quickly turned around and started heading back to where I had come from.

I was pretty sure it was my imagination playing tricks on me but I didn't want to stick around to find out.

I didn't hear any other noise as I ran back, but Maggie seemed to also want to get out of there.

She sometimes would start whimpering and look into the woods which made me run faster.

I finally made it back to find my parents starting a fire in the fire pit outside.

"Did you find anything good?" My mom sat down in a chair next to the fire.

"Yeah, I found a trail leading into the woods. I started walking down it..." I let the sentence hang, still trying to catch my breath front the run back.

My mom caught on to my breathing and raised a brow, "why are you out of breath?"

"Uh, I ran back. Good exercise." I shrugged, hoping they would let it go.

After all, there probably was nothing out there anyways.

That night after the fire, we all went to bed and let Maggie sleep inside also. She was acting scared for some reason my parents couldn't figure out.

All I kept thinking was that there was something out there in the woods, but then again, I was probably just being paranoid.
