CHAPTER 8
The days went by so fast. I spent most of it at Jason's place, even though he tried to bribe me to move in with him, but I wanted to experience the whole 'fall in love' situation myself. So we went out twice a week on dates, the weekends we spent most of the time indoors. Working or just snuggling in front of the television.
I rarely found myself being haunted by my past, little did I know that things were too good to be true. That it was waiting in the shadows ready to lurch itself at me at any moment.
Even though Sally is my best friend and has been since I moved here, I haven't told her everything about my past. Why I get curled up into a ball during Christmas holidays, or how I seem to be terrified of little kids. She just assumed it's because of how rough my childhood was with my dad.
Adam
I can't believe Maggs is dating jase. What made her fall for him? He is no good for her. "And you are?" his subconscious snickers.
Without realizing Adam crushed the glass of water he was holding in his hand.
"Are you okay Mr. Fitzgerald? I heard glass fall. (She looked at his hand)You're bleeding! Please sit down sir." Francis almost shouted at Adam but she knew that would be crossing the line, Even though she has been with the family since before Adam was born.
Adam paid no attention to Francis while she cleaned the wound. It hurt every time she would remove a splint from the cuts, but not nearly as much as how it hurts loving Maggie while she is loving some one else.
It's been weeks since Samantha left the house. Their divorce is almost finalized. Their parent's weren't to happy about his decision but there was no way Adam was going to spend another ten years pretending to be happily married to a women, who only thought about herself and took pride in her appearance.
She didn't like his friends and was always making excuses as to why she was not ready to get pregnant. At least having a child in loveless marriage would have prevented me from going down memory lane wondering how life would have been if he married Maggie.
She didn't come from a rich family but was well mannered than most. Her mum raised her well. She had everything a man like me could want in a good woman.
She adapted so well to my life style. One would have thought she was born into this life.
We could have been so happy .Damn my parents for taking her away from me. Damn them for getting involved in my life and ruining my future.
I'd give anything to have her backing my arms. The memories of their countless love making started flooding back. He tried so many times to get her pregnant, in the hope that his parents would let her stay in his life. But nothing happened. She just could not conceive.
He would have given her the world, but he was so stupid to think that his parents would really disown him and cut him off financially had he not married Samantha, to unite their families and make them the riches strongest alliance in Africa.
He should have stepped up and tell them that's there's no way he was leaving her. He loved her madly, and his parents would some how have accepted their relationship. There's no way that they would have actually disowned their own son. How foolish was he to believe them.
Adam needed to leave or he was going to break more than just a glass. He decided that run was what he needed right now. It was already late in the evening and real chilly outside with winter approaching them soon. Hopefully the cold will help him forget, but in the meantime he has got to do something about john and their plan to get Maggie back into his life.
By the time he returned back home after his run he was completely and utterly exhausted. The burning pain he was experiencing while inhaling was definitely a welcomed feeling that would make him temporarily forget.
After having a shower and a drink to ease his muscles, Adam did something he promised himself he would never do. He called Maggie. "What if she is with Jason" he thought. He put the receiver back on the counter and started pacing up and down the lobby until his he legs protested that they have had enough torture and decided to sit down at the bar. From here onwards Adam decided that alcohol was his best friend and the next best thing to having Maggie and helping him forget his past.
The rest of the weekend Adam decided to hide away from the world outside. He spent every awakening hour drinking and drowning his sorrows. Saturday evening came around and he called Maggie. He just needed to hear her voice. He knew it was not a very good idea but right now he didn't care about being week and crazy.
He dialed her number it was embed in his mind after spending so much time building up the courage in the past to call her but never did.
This time was different he was going to following through with his plan. Maggie's phone just rang. Before Adam could comprehend what to do next he heard the voice of an angel.
He stayed so quiet afraid she would know it's him, even though silently he hoped she would know but still didn't want to risk it. After a few seconds, which felt like hours he felt his fingers go stiff. He didn't realize he was holding the phone that tight.
Adam fell to his knees the realization that he might have lost her forever just kicked him under his ass. Never ending tears cascaded down this strong mans face. For the first time in his life he felt defeated and to think it was all because of love. Never in a million years did Adam Fitzgerald think that a woman break him.
For that whole week Adam continued to wallow in his pity. He did nothing but hid behind the walls in his apartment. His phones kept ringing and so did the door bell, but the only person Adam wanted to see was her.
He made Francis hide the car keys and swear the drivers that they would not drive him any where that he was ill. The poor women knew the battle going on inside Adam. She witnessed first hand after he separated from Maggie those first few months. How he would just block the world out by staring out the window or sitting on the roof top by himself. She knew it had something to do with Maggie then and she would bet a million rand this time was no different.
The temptation to drive all the way to Cape Town was strong but he knew if he really loved Maggie he would give her time. He just needed to wait it out. Things with Jason wouldn't last. When they broke up then he would sweep her off her feet and marry her.
If he could cut off his one hand to go back in time and change things .He would do it in a blink of an eye. Nothing could take away the pain he felt. It was finally catching up with him. After blocking it out for so many months.
It's come back to haunt him.
