Chapter 13
"Maggie is that really you" anticipating the answer Adam leant closer until he saw the tiny figure sit up and wipe the hair from her face.
"Adam? Do you want something to eat?" Maggie stood up
At the sound of her voice he went limp. Dropping the bottle of whisky he was holding causing the golden liquid to spill all over the floor, the sound of the bottle dropping caused Maggie to jump up from where she was standing and fell to the floor at the sudden movement.
Adam grabbed hold of her and within seconds she was in his lap, both of them sitting on the couch. Time stood still for both of them. Neither saying a word, both absorbing the moment. Adam kept blinking his eyes trying to make sure if what he is seeing is real. Suddenly Maggie slapped him so hard causing his head to whip sideways at the strength of the blow. And then she stood up Adam following suit.
"I suppose I deserve that, "Adam mumbled.
"Deserve? You want to talk about deserve? Let's start at the begging huh. Let's start with why is it that I deserved to be tossed aside like a piece of trash. Why was it that you deserved to not love me? Why is it that you decided that I deserved something better than you? Why is it that I deserved to have my life taken away from me? Tell me Adam."
By then Maggie was almost screaming whilst tears streamed down her face. In controllable sobs escaped her lips preventing her from speaking anymore. There was so much she planned on saying to Adam. Some how she knew she won't able to say it all. He still held a power over her.
Adam just stood there not saying anything. He wasn't ready for this confrontation. He never thought that when he woke one day he would find Maggie in his house. The though never occurred to him, not once. Having her here made it seem surreal. He wanted to know her reason for showing up here, but he was afraid if he dared asked that question she would turn on her heal immediately and run. That was the last thing he wanted was for her to run again.
He so much wanted to grab hold of her body and comfort her. He wanted to wipe away the tears and promise her that he would never make her cry again, unless it was tears of happiness. Seeing her cry again brought it all back to that day.
Adam dropped to his knees in front of Maggie, submitting himself to her. Tears kept coming. Maggie tried to turn and leave but some how fate glued her feet to the ground. She came to say what needed to be said and she needed to move on with her life. "God please help me; give me the strength to go through with this." Maggie silently prayed. When she finally opened her eyes she saw Adam kneeling at her feet.
"Adam what are you doing?" she said in between sniffles.
"Please forgive me Maggie. There are no words to describe how truly sorry I am. There are no words in this life time for me to prove how much I regret it all. I promise to give you the rest of life making it up to you. I spent the last twelve years trying to work out the right words to apologize. There was not a moment that went by that I didn't think about that day. There were so many times I wanted to pick up the phone and tell you how much I loved you or rather how much I still love you. I never meant to hurt you Maggie; it was never the plan to let you go. I wanted to marry you Maggie, I wanted to have a whole soccer team of babies running around our house, but I was young and was afraid of loosing my parents. They threatened to take away all my money Maggs and what kind of life could I possibly have given you if I had no money. I wanted to give you the world Maggs on a golden platter. It was dumb of me to believe that they would actually disown me if I married you." He said mournfully.
