LUCEY'S POV
I stared in disbelief back at the screen. How could this be possible? Well, I mean, obviously I know how this could be possible because we weren't exactly careful, but still. In no way was I ready for a baby, and in no way was I ready to break this to Luke. I stood frozen.
A tear ran down my cheek, and I was unsure what emotion had even caused it. Was I sad? No, I decided, I couldn't be sad. There was no reason to be; Luke and I were both adults, and while we weren't exactly financially stable, we certainly had people that loved us and would be there whenever we needed.
But just because I wasn't sad didn't mean I should be happy, right? I mean, finding out that you're pregnant after only being back with your ex for a number of weeks was not exactly ideal. Not that I wasn't absolutely in love with Luke, but a baby wouldn't be the best relationship builder.
So scared then. That's all that was left. And I was most definitely scared. Scared of deciding what to do, scared of the unknown. Afraid of telling Luke, but more afraid of keeping it to myself. But fear was not the only thing I was feeling.
Terrified, yes, but not entirely. There was a hint of something else, hardly there but just barely noticeable. I wasn't sure what it was yet, but it felt familiar. Perhaps a bit like... Excitement? I let out a sigh that sounded more like a sob, and promptly placed a hand over my mouth. I needed to calm down and figure out what to do, but both my mind and heart were racing a million miles an hour.
Just then, I heard the front door open and slam shut, and two sets of footsteps entered the living room. Calum and Luke were home from work, and I was still staring at a pregnancy test in the bathroom. I quickly used my shirt sleeve to wipe underneath my eyes, and I ran a hand through my hair. The test I stuffed into the medicine cabinet behind the mirror and cleared my throat.
"Lucey? Are you home?" Cal calls out, and I pad into the hallway and down the stairs.
"I'm here," I say weakly, giving a small wave. Luke walks over and takes me in his arms, kissing me gently and stroking my hair.
"I missed you so so much today. How have you been?"
"I've been alright. Kelsey and I actually went shopping today," I half-lie. Calum's face pales.
"Kelsey was here?" he asks quietly.
"Um, yeah. She stopped by to get some of her things, and we just decided we needed some girl time." It was mostly the truth, wasn't it?
"Well, I'm glad you had a good time," Luke interjects, clearly trying to change the subject. I nod slowly and glance away.
"I guess I will go start on dinner. What are you guys hungry for?"
"Actually," Luke starts, a grin spreading across his face, "we are ordering in. The boys are coming over."
"What's the occasion?"
"It's a celebration! Calum and I just got promoted to manager positions at Tom's!" Luke beams and I can't help but he happy for him.
"That's awesome, you guys!"
"Yeah, it's like an extra $5.00 an hour, which is huge," Calum adds."So Ash and Mike will be over in about an hour. I'm going to go shower and change!" Luke shouts as he sprints down the hall toward the bedroom.
I choose to say nothing in response and instead meander out to the kitchen and sit on one of the stools. Calum walks in after me and stands across the counter.
"Something the matter?" he asks softly, reaching across to poke me in the cheek.
"Nothing," I say, forcing a smile. "I'm just a little tired from my day out."
"With Kelsey," he points out and I sigh."I'm sorry she was here without you knowing Calum, but sometimes things come up that you don't always count on." I trace my finger over a scratch in the faux marble, and avoid eye contact.
"I don't care that she was here, I just-- You know what? It doesn't matter. I'm going to dig around for some paper plates and plastic-ware. Not feeling dishes tonight."
I nod and try to hold back the tears threatening to leak as he walks away. I really need to pull myself together. The guys will be here any minute, and I don't even want to imagine the questions that will fly if I sit and mope the entire time. Within a few minutes, Luke returns from the bathroom and comes up behind me to kiss the top of my head.
"You know I love you, right?" he whispers into my hair.
"Of course," I mumble and bite my bottom lip.
"I think this promotion is a big step for us. I mean we'll be able to afford so much more. Maybe even our own apartment!"
Or a baby I think to myself, but I turn to hug him and bury my face in his chest. I just have to get through tonight, and then I will break the news to him.
Fifteen minutes later, I hear a familiar knock on the door, and Calum lets Ashton and Michael in. It appears they brought Chinse take-out, and I couldn't be more thrilled. There's no way I'm having cravings this early, right?
"What's up bitches??" Michael hollers and everyone rolls their eyes. Now there's the party.
After everyone settles in and the food gets distributed, Ashton rifles through the shelf for a movie. I'm really going to miss times like this. I grab a blanket and curl up against Luke, setting the rest of my General Tso's chicken on the coffee table.
"WAIT! Don't start the show yet! I have to pee like you wouldn't believe!" Michael screams dramatically and leaps off the couch.
"Jesus, Michael! Could you be more obnoxious?" Luke whispers harshly under his breath, and I actually laugh for the first time all day.
Just when it begins to seem like this may not be the most miserable evening of my life, I hear hard footsteps from upstairs and look up to see Michael standing at the top. His face is pale, and he says notion as he motions for me to come up.
