You inhaled a deep breath of fresh air, scented gently with the delicate smell of cherry blossoms and the sweet aroma of spring itself. The flowers were fragrant, and their smells often calmed your frazzled mind and allowed you to focus on your job.

You carefully brushed strands of your intricately done (h/l) (h/c) away from your face. You then looked down at your long pale pink colored kimono, smoothing out a few wrinkles and readjusting your sitting position slightly. The long silk fabric cascaded onto the stone pavement of the platform you sat on.

You were currently on duty guarding an ancient temple from evil. You'd been sitting outside this temple for quite some time and making sure that no evil was allowed to pass into the sacred grounds. The temple was at the top of a hill, snugly tucked away in a forest, granting you the peace and quiet that you wanted.

You clasped your hands in your lap and closed your eyes again, using your sense of sound to track any forms of evil.

"Hey there, my precious goddess," a slow and deep voice called out to you.

You clenched your jaw with frustration and opened your eyes, giving your visitor a glare. A pair of narrow, catlike eyes with red irises stared back at you as the youkai sitting a few feet away from you smirked.

Usually, the same youkai didn't dare to cross you twice, but this one had been very persistent. He casually leaned back against the upper step of the staircase, propping his elbow up on it and holding his chin in his hand as he watched you closely. His kimono colored with dark reds and black contrasted with the brightness of your environment. A hand with fingernails painted black and sharpened like claws ran through his messy head of black hair.

"So, how have you been?" he asked nonchalantly, his sharp teeth glinting in the sunlight.

"I haven't changed at all since the last time you came, and I was just fine before you showed up," you stated bluntly.

"Aww, come on, sweetheart, you don't have to be like that with me. It just seems pretty lonely up here so I thought you'd appreciate my company," he responded, holding his hand over his chest as if you'd physically hurt him with your words.

"I don't."

The youkai sighed deeply before running his hand up and down the leg of a statue of a dragon, his fingers carefully tracing the details.

"Don't touch that," you barked, watching him with a sharp gaze.

"You're feistier than usual, aren't you?" he commented as he took his hand off the statue, watching you with an unwavering gaze. His stare made you squirm slightly and you turned your head away before closing your eyes again.

"Go away," you ordered simply.

"What? You don't like me? You don't even know who I am!" he whined, making you grumble.

"I don't need to know you for me not to like you," you retorted, wishing he would go away.

He was quiet for a moment, making you open your eyes and look over to see him still sitting there. Your heart dropped with disappointment since you'd expected him to be gone, yet he was still there. He was looking down at his feet, and his eyes looked blank.

A sort of worry started to come over you as he turned his gaze back to you and you saw a sort of rage burning in his eyes. "Nobody does," he stated flatly, all previous tone of amusement lost, "Nobody needs to know me for them not to like me. That's just how being a youkai works. Nobody cares about me. All they care about is that I'm evil and I have to be destroyed."

You watched him in silence, trying to stay calm even though your heart was starting to beat faster. He was giving off dangerous vibes, and you prepared yourself to fight back against him.

He stood up and balled his hands into fists as a dark aura started to surround him more strongly. "Did it ever occur to you that I didn't want to be born into this life? Did it ever enter your mind that evil manifested itself in me against my will? I don't want to be a bad guy; I really don't. And even though evil has worked its way into my genes, I'm still trying to fight off the urges to do bad things. I could kill you right now if I wanted to, but I don't, so I'm not going to."

He walked closer to you and ran his hands through his hair with frustration. "Why are you here?" you asked quickly as you looked up at his tall and lanky figure.

"Because..." He paused, and you noticed a look of weakness flash in his eyes. His eyes slowly met yours before he sat back down next to you. "Because you're so pure and untainted that I thought you might be able to find the good in me..." he admitted quietly.

Your eyes widened in shock. The other times he'd visited you, he'd been so sneaky and arrogant that you'd wanted to destroy him and rid the world of his existence. But now, he seemed so lost and alone. You had no idea what to do, so you didn't respond.

Before you could react, the youkai laid down beside you, resting his head in your lap and wrapping his arms around your waist. "Do you think you could help me by finding the good in me?" he requested, his voice and expression uncharacteristically soft as he watched you expectantly.

You blushed and froze, but you eventually let yourself relax slightly. You placed your hand on his head and gently brushed his black hair out of his face as you looked at his facial features. He was a handsome man, but, in your mind, he was still evil. But maybe that could be fixed.

"Maybe, in time..." you answered. You were surprised that after feeling such a strong hatred towards him, you now felt the instinct to take care of him, like he was a stray animal.

A bright smile appeared on his face that made your own heart warm. "Tetsurou. My name is Tetsurou."

"I'm (f/n)."

There was a long silence after your introductions, and your mind felt numb as you gently ran your fingers through his hair, eliciting purrs of content from him. The silk of your kimono against his skin felt heavenly. "Can I stay for awhile longer?" he pleaded with a sigh of content.

"Only a few minutes. The meeting will be over soon and we can't be seen together like this," you replied. He murmured in agreement before closing his own eyes and listening to the gentle sound of the breeze rustling leaves. He then nestled his face in your stomach, taking in your comforting warmth. It was a human sensation that he'd missed more than anything.

In the matter of a few short minutes, Tetsurou had managed to make you realize how lonely you'd been feeling and give you the company you'd been craving. It was strange how the need for company seemed to break boundaries. Maybe he wasn't so bad.
