It wasn't long until a few years had pasted, Tino had grown into a happy and healthy twelve year old boy with. Chase had long since gotten him his own bed and room in the apartment. They were best friends and Chase had thought him a lot of things, things that he wouldn't learn in school. He knew how to fix his own wheelchair, how to get things from out of reach places when no one was around and many more. Some of these Chase had taught him and others he had to teach himself when the time had called for it. Chase had bought him a second chair to keep at ground level, now that Tino was growing it necessary since he was getting heavier and making two trips had been easier before when he had basically weighed nothing to Chase but time was taking it's toll but it was more so Chase didn't want to go get the heavy chair every time they went somewhere.
One day when Tino went to school with Miss Coopers four boys something happened. When the five of them were going their usual route and minding their own business and talking about homework answers. Mathias copying them down as quickly as Lukas could list them off, he had fallen asleep as soon as he got home the night before due to a late soccer practice. Berwald was busy with his head in the clouds as he fallowed them blindly. Erin ran ahead and then came back, trying to get them all to go faster.
Then they passed a dinner, one that had an overflow crowd from the bar next door, from the night before. Then as they passed a drunken man yelled at the boys. Cursing and profanities, Lukas out of habit threw his book on Tino's lap, him being the nearest person and then covering Erin's ears so that he wouldn't hear. If Erin ever swore in front of their mother he feared what would happen to the rest of them, she would probably think he picked it up from the three of them.
The man continued and the boys finally understood what he was saying, he was yelling about the kid in the wheelchair. He was going off about that and they stood there and then each looked down at Tino. His face was fearful and his eyes wide to a point where they looked like they would jump out of his head. He was terrified about the amount of anger the man had. The next thing they knew the intoxicated man threw something, it shattered against Tino's wheelchair and they heard his yelp of pain. Mathias then grabbed the handles to his chair and all of them ran for the rest of the way to school.
When they got there a few teachers had seen them and one of them walked up to the boys.
"What, wrong boys, you're not even late... In fact you're all early." She told them as they caught their breath and then her eyes landed on Tino, he was holding his arm and his hair covered his face.
"Tino, what happened, your hurt." She said as she bent down and he let her take a look. What she found was glass shards in his arm and cheek. She let out a gasp as the other boys looked with horror at what the man had done.
"I'll take you to the nurse's office right away. Is anyone else hurt?" She asked as they shook their heads no. She then nodded and brought Tino inside.
The teacher called his dad as the nurse looked him over and said that she couldn't take the glass out, he needed a doctor for this. The nurse tried to calm Tino down as the teacher spoke with his father... well it was more her trying to explain that he came to school like that and his dad freaking out because he was at work. Then all of a sudden the phone went dead, he hung up on her. When Tino heard her say that.
"That means he's coming and he's not happy..." Tino said without missing a beat to what she had said before hand. The two women looked at each other and few minutes later Chase walked into the school, still in his oil and grease covered coveralls. He spent a good five minutes arguing with the principal before they let him see Tino.
"Bud, what the hell happened to you?" Chase asked as concern and worry filled his voice as he knelt down in front of him.
"A guy at the diner threw a beer bottle at me when we passed by..." Tino said his voice shaken. Chase got up and told the teacher and nurse that he was bringing his son to a hospital, so he wouldn't be in school today. They agreed with him and the two of them left. Chase brought him to the hospital and while Tino was being taken care of by a doctor, he made a phone call.
